( 4- Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 4, 2000 } Hockey is Back Orono Atom Leafs Win Exhibition Orono Atom Leafs hit the ice last Friday smoking Port Perry in exhibition play 7-1. Looks like coach Blaker has the squad fired up and ready for the regular seasçn! Play was a bit sluggish in the first, but with a few quality quality passes, a few good plays, and a couple of key hits, Orono slipped into road gear. Speedy forward Jessy Rice and rookie Matt Dobson tied up the Port's defense midperiod midperiod and created some excellent scoring chances. Andrew Kirkbride nailed Orono's first goal of the season, season, snapping in a low shot from the slot, through the pads at 2:21 unassisted. Saturday, September 23 was a wet and miserable day but the show went on. When the Bethany Hills team arrived at Port Hope they were asked if they wanted to ride despite the weather --, all schools but one wanted to compete. The show was moved to Batterwood. The host's were very generous generous with their property and the indoor arena made a vast difference to the competition. Even with the change of , venue the show only started one hour late. The judge had come from Oakville and seemed pleased with the riders' efforts. The scores' from the jumping and dressage were added together to determine the winners. The Bethany Hills School team of Kim Sondergaard, Marika Petro and Jackie King ended up the overall winners, beating beating out three Trinity teams. The show was the first in a series of four inter-school shows in Ontario. The next competition will be held at Bethany Hills School on October October 25. It is a mounted games day. The Leaft took a penalty with 2:37 left in the second and Mariposa tied the game on a power play wrap around. End to end fast-paced action dominated the third as both teams cranked up the speed. Jesse Rice put Orono ahead @ 4:36 on a 3-way passing play from defence- man Kyle Balson and Jevon Staples. Mariposa tied it up and went ahead 3-2 late in the third, but Orono came back to pull even on a one-timer by Robinson in front, off a Matt Moffat backhand setup. The game ended in a 3-3 tie after a penalty-filled last minute. Shots: Orono 13, Mariposa 8. Great team effort and the Atom reps go at it again Friday night.
