Ü Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 4, 2000 ) Municipal Election 20oo PRESS RELEASES Who's running for Regional - Wards 3 & 4 ANN DRESLINSKI Ann Dreslinski believes the issues are too important to Clarington to sit this one out! Clarington, October 1, 2000 Former Regional Councillor Ann Dreslinski has decided that the issues facing the people of Clarington over the next 3 years are too important to just sit on the sidelines and not be involved. In submitting submitting her registration papers at the Clarington Municipal Administrative Centre Dreslinski states that she is fully committed to working with the new Council. "This is the Council that will have to deal with the issues of amalgamation and restructuring. restructuring. This is a Council that will have at least 3 new members, members, a new Mayor and quite possibly, no one with Regional experience. The next 3 years will be critical to Clarington's future and I feel that my experience as a past Regional Councillor will benefit benefit all of Clarington's residents." residents." Next Council The protection of the environment, environment, the wise spending of tax dollars and the personal personal safety of all citizens must be of critical importance to those who lead. I, as a life long resident of Clarington realize how essential essential each of these are. RICHARD WARD I have a keen interest in municipal politics which has caused me to attend almost all Regional Planning Committee and Regional Council meetings for the past twelve years. I have the greatest respect for the efforts of the Regional Planning Committee and would appreciate the opportunity opportunity too provide Clarington residents with competent representation. representation. I do not agree with the campaign financing system and feel better decisions regarding the public's best interests can be made outside the influence of contributions. I believe in the fundamental fundamental principles of democracy and would use the opportunity opportunity to reinforce ethical deci sions.' My plan to lower property taxes is too better manage public assets and reduce waste. As the Municipality of Clarington enters the new Millennium, Willie believes that changes, especially governance governance changes, will be facing facing this next Council. Can we here in the Municipality of Clarington afford to stay with the status quo and resist change or should we embrace change and try and develop a "Made at Home" solution. Whatever options the Municipality of Clarington has before it, the one Willie will support has to be in the best interest of the residents of the Municipality, The carving up of the Municipality of Clarington to' suit the néeds of other Municipalities in the Region of Durham is not an option which favours Clarington nor- Willie. Outside of a handful of major employers, Clarington has no industrial sector to speak of. With a commercial and industrial tax assessment assessment at about 10%, the tax burden rests squarely on the shoulders' of the residential taxpayer. As a member of Council, Willie will work to see that the next Council sets as a priority a plan to vigorously vigorously attract major industry to this area. Industry pays taxes and industry provides provides jobs. The local economy economy also benefits. This will send put a message to the Province that we in Clarington have a financially viable and balanced economy economy where we can stand on our own two feet. As the fastest growing Municipality in the Region and the fourth fastest growing growing community of its §ize in Canada, Clarington has not kept pace with providing recreational services to meet the growing demand of its users. The Municipality has not been shy about taking your tax dollars but has not proportionately invested back into the community with much needed recreational recreational capital projects. The popularity of sports such as hockey by both girls and boys, men and women, figure figure skating, speed skating, lacrosse etc. have pushed availability of ice time to the breaking point where the Municipality cannot wait for the next ice pad to come on stream in the year 2006. Willie will work to see that this project will break ground during this next term of office. For the residents who call Clarington home and for future residents and potential potential businesses, we need to provide a safe environment to live, not just the perception perception of a safe environment. More front line police officers to enhance the role similar to Newcastle's successful "village "village constable" program in other areas of the Municipality is a priority which Willie would like to see the next Council work together to put into place. Willie and his wife Donna and their four children reside jn the Village of Newcastle. Willie would like to be elected elected as your voice on Council, an effective voice who will not shy away from speaking bn your behalf. The slogan, which the Municipality of Clarington has adopted is, "The Community with Future!" Well ladies and gentlemen, gentlemen, thé future is "now."
