' As the dogs and their owners embarked on the 5K Lions Walk for Dog Guides, the Knights of Columbus were serving ùp hot pancakes pancakes inside the Community Centre. At 9:30 a.m Lisa Young kicked off the official open- . mg' of Fall Festival 2000 by singing 'Q Canada' in the new Millennium Parkette. In his absence Master of Ceremonies, Rod McArthur, acknowledged the long hours of hard work,. Ron Flope put into the, development development of the Millennium Parkette. Pastor Rob Brouwer prayed ,a blessing on the Parkette, which he referred to as "a sanctuary without walls," after which the fountain fountain was turned on. The Main Street was then overtaken by beds on wheels, as seven teams competed in the bed races. This year's winner was a split decision between the Durham Regional Police bed team, and that of Foster Brooke Centre. The Foster Brooke bed did cross the finish line first, but they lost a wheel on the last leg, so judges ruled a tie contest with the Police. The New Massey House entry, which was a cross between a bed and a go cart, won a prize for the most original entry. A variety of entertainment entertainment throughout the day was provided by such groups as the Ganaraska Country Cloggers, the Down on the Corner Gang, and Brian & Betty Anne. Dr. Topolie of Courtice, examined all manner of stuffed bears from 2-3 p.m., most of which required nothing more than a band-aid to maid their hurts. The Bear Clinic was followed by an animal exhibit by Jungle Cat World. Over 70 entries registered for the # 4 th Annual Newcastle Antique Car Show, which were lined up on both sides of King Street for almost two blocks. Randall Headon of rAshbum won an award for having the best pre-1941 entry in the show. Adrian DeLatt won the 1946-59 class and the 'Best of Show' with his 157 Chevy Bel Air Convertible. The Community Hall auditorium and parking lot was filled with vendors selling selling a variety of baked goods and hand made craft items. Yuk-Yuk's comedy troupe performed to a full house in the Community Hall Saturday night, putting a hilarious end to a very successful successful Fall Festival. Dr. Topolie of Courtice, gives Hayley's bear Fluffy (L),'and Dylan's Brownie a once over in their annual check-up.
