Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 18,2000- 13 ) "The Kist" by: My no Van Dyke When I retired a few years ago, one of the first promises to myself was to clean up the garage and the small barn we have out back. In order to clean out the garage, I must have a place to put things - which would be the bam. So, the first job was to clean up the barn. I went upstairs (in the bam) and started moving wheels, tires, aluminum lawn chair frames and some old bikes the kids used to have. None of them ride bikes now... Under, this I found two small wooden chairs. A lump suddenly came into my throat. These were the chairs made by father from "The Kist". If you were a Dutch immigrant, you will probably immediately know the significance significance of that little four-letter word. Since most of you aren't .Dutch, I'll explain. I was bom in the village of St. Anna Parochie, in the Province of Friesland in The Netherlands. Dutch people really don't call it Holland since that is a province. Dutch people don't call it The Netherlands either, as they have trouble pronouncing "th" since it is not in their vocabulary. vocabulary. It's Nederland (Nay-der- iund). I've often wondered who changed it. At least it's close, not like Germany where the country is really called Deutchsland. My father, Marten Van Dijk, was a potato farmer in Nederland. He worked for his father and his uncle, while my mother, Sytske was a homemaker. homemaker. The Second World War was very hard on my parents. parents. My dad, a soldier, was home on leave and their home had no heat. One night, he and a friend went out back of their farm and cut down an old tree so. they could warm up the house. They were captured captured by the Germans for cutting cutting down a tree on his own farm. He was jailed and then sent to a "work camp" in Belgium for 14 months. My mother, according to the Germans, looked Jewish. They would consistently stop her and ask why she was not wearing the required "Star of David". Often, she and her * twin sister had to hide when the German soldiers were around. After the war, the country was devastated. There were too many people and not enough ways to make a living. The Dutch Government sponsored an immigration program with several countries. One of them was Canada. My parents would hear about the others who immigrated immigrated to "The Land of Milk and Honey". These recent immigrants would send letters back to their families and of course, there was little bad news. No one would want to admit that they made a mistake mistake but most appeared to have settled into Canadian life quite well. Canada needed farm help and there were plenty of takers. takers. My parents decided they would go too. . It was really quite easy. You didn't need any money- the Dutch Government and the Canadian sponsor would look after your passage. All you had to do was go through the mountain of red tape and get on the boat. There was one expense, "the kist". It was a large wooden box about 3 metres long, two metres high and two and a half metres wide that would contain contain all of your worldly possessions. possessions. This box would arrive about two weeks after the immigrant. On March 14, 1051, "The Kist", my parents, with twenty-five Canadian dollars, my one-year-old sister sister and my five-year-old self were on an ancient former troop carrier, the "Volendam", sailing for Canada. We left amid a sea of tears from our family. "We will never see them again," was a common refrain. No one else in our family immigrated anywhere.. anywhere.. On the ship my sister and I . stayed with my mother and my dad stayed with the men (men and women weren't allowed to stay together). The trip was a horrible nine days. Toilets were plugged, vomit everywhere -not exactly exactly the "Dutch clean" environment environment that we were used to. My parents never set foot on à ship again... After landing in Halifax, we boarded a train for Niagara Falls. It was a long journey. My dad didn't like what he first saw. As we passed through the Maritime Provinces and Quebec, he thought cvcryi'iic lived in a wooden shack The farms looked very poor. Things changed in Southern Ontario and they were pleased to see better buildings and no snow in Niagara. We were picked up in Niagara Falls. Bruce Lambert, our new "boss" showed up with his mother in a maroon '48 Pontiac four door sedan. It was the most beautiful car I had ever laid my five-year-old eyes on. We settled into our new "provided" "provided" home. An old frame farm house. It had running water (a hand pump in the kitchen) and outdoor toilet. It was a comfortable old house that was used for "the hired man". They brought us fresh eggs, milk, butter and some potatoes. My father thought they were the worst potatoes he had ever eaten. We shopped at the local grocery store in Virgil. For $5.00 we had all the groceries we could carry. My parents were also very disappointed in the bread A few weeks later "The Kist" finally arrived. We unloaded it and got out our furniture', my bike, some clothing and bedding. We could finally turn the old farmhouse into a home. "jThe Kist" was immediately converted converted into a chicken house. My parents wanted their own fresh chickens and eggs. A few years later we moved to another house. My dad got a job with Ontario Hydro building the Sir Adam Beck Generating Station at Niagara Falls. It was much better money than farming. The "milk and honey" were finally coming. "The kist" was ripped apart and my dad made the two little little chairs for my sister and me. When we started our own family, my father gave me the two chairs. My dad died almost ten years ago. I suppose we are all pack rats but there are some things you can never throw away or sell. Things like those two little little handmade wooden chairs. ownrwiCT school.
