Collier paid for and expected a new house; "one that will stand the test of time; in years, not in Weeks," he told Clarington Councillors Monday evening. According to Collier, a number of new home purchasers purchasers in their subdivision at the east side of Newcastle, have serious problems with their new homes. "My basement has severe frost cracks up to 2 inches wide," Collier stated at Council Meeting. A concrete expert himself, Collier attributes attributes these cracks to the lack of straw used when the concrete concrete was poured last winter. "Various things have been done to my foundation to repair it," he stated. "It has been excavated twice; and most of the work has been done while we were living in the house. My basement looks like a war zone, not like a new building. ' Water has penetrated above grade, stone lintels have pulled away from the garage wat, etc. Collier went on to state tljat several of the new home owners owners in the subdivision have foundation problems. "The forming company and the concrete supplier were not responsible for the cracked walls and cracked 'footings," stated Collier. "They point to no straw being used to insulate the new concrete concrete in the sub-division." Grant Ashton, Supervisor of Operations for the Municipality stated, "Clarington Public Works Department is prepared to, report to Council for approval of a budget for work in 2001, on this Woods Walk." Should Council approve funding for 2001, emphasis will be placed on the entrances, to the 'Woods Walk', the installation of filter cloth, gravel and wood chips on the path, explained Ashton. "Money in the budget for this hasn't been approved," Tracy Osmond told the • gathering.' gathering.' "There is no guarantee it will be approved. It is your job to convince council the budget allotment is an invest- , ment in our community." This area was a well landscaped landscaped park back in the early 1900's. "It is our hope to ' retain that, and provide the closing link to a 40 mile trail system," stated Osmond. "In .1967 Sydney B. Rutherford had a dream and had'the foresight to acquire (continued page 6)
