Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday. October 18, 2000 - 5 Country Cafe Undefeated in Three FIVE GOALS IN THIRD PERIOD STUN MINDEN FANS The Atom Reps notched their second win downing a talented Minden team on Saturday night, way, way up north, 5 to 2. Goalie Jason Hoyne made six consecutive stops early in the first saving the Cafe Kids behinds - keeping the team in the game. Around mid-period, thanks to Hoyne's heroics, the momentum turned and Orono came up with six good shots, but the first ended scoreless. Orono found themselves short-handed at 14:00 of the second, but Hoyne came up with two more huge saves. The team was tagged again at 9:38 and Hoyne turned away two more Minden chances -- a chest save and a quick pad save. Minden opened the scoring scoring with three minutes left on a low shot off a scramble in front. Who knows what went down during an unscheduled flood in the second intermission, intermission, but coach Blaker must have delivered the "magic formula" formula" because the team exploded for five goals in the third, nailing down a 5 - 2 win in front of the stunned M inden fans. Andrew Kirkbride, Devin Robinson with two, Matt Moffat and Jesse Rice provided provided the scoring with Rob Blaker, Kyle Balson, Lucas Leech, Jesse Rice, Devin Robinson and Michael Whelan snagging assists. Minden scored late in the third at 1:21, but they never really recovered from that overpowering overpowering Orono offensive outburst. outburst. Orono outshot Minden 20 to 14 and ran their undefeated undefeated streak to three. TRT Sand & Gravel Kick Off 2000-01 Season The TRT Sand and Gravel novice kicked off the new sear son with a solid effort. The gravel-pit gang lead by coach Steve Cox, tangled with Scotia Bank. Orono came up a little short but put three by the Bowmanville net-minder. Patrick Rempel supplied some strong goal tending in his first start between the pipes. Brian Knapp scored the first goal of the season assisted by Kurtis Zwolinski and Ryan Wood. Wood scored the second, second, assisted by Kevin Jackson and Scott Duquette. Brandon Leblanc rounded out the scoring scoring assisted by Brian Knapp and Cary Konopka. Nick Lawrence, Chris Hermanson, Brandon Cox, Kevin Schoenmaker, Jesse Lambert, Cory Weiss, and John DeVries played some awesome hockey! (continued from page 1) because of that look in his eye and that intense, fatherly scowl that crosses his brow. His tightly pursed lips and the resoundingly deep voice that belches forth add to the idea that he does, indeed, know what he is talking about. Some, however, will find it altogether disquieting. I'm not going to speculate as to the Freudian reasons for this, but I will say that he simply doesn't have the same gusto to compete with Stock or Chretien for 'quickest run up the stairs of Parliament.' And you won't see Joe in a wetsuit anytime soon, either. Speaking of wetsuits, contrary contrary to some popular opinion, I actually think the Day-led Canadian Alliance is going to do surprisingly well. Gaining support by way of former Tories indenturing themselves with Day, the Alliance has garnered regular front-page news coverage. Granted, it does help to have Conrad Black, owner of the National Post, in your back pocket. And, indeed, beginning your political venture as Official Opposition can't hurt either. It would seem as if a lot of former Tory supporters may, like their representatives, hop on over to the CA. I wager we haven't seen the last of the CA's Official Opposition status status just yet. So we can all look forward to potential 'fireside 'fireside chats' between our leaders leaders as mr. Day has suggested. I'm not going to speculate about the actual number of seats any of these parties are going to end up with -- my crystal ball does not deal in such specifics. But I will say that the Liberals will end up with the crown, the CA will be the Official Opposition, the NDP will, just barely, retain its official party status, while the Progressive Conservatives will see a return to the humbling humbling Kim Campbell experience. experience. So there you are. Enjoy the election.
