A study has been Initiated to address the transformation of a portion of Highway 2 in Courtice so that it can become the vibrant heart of the community community - attracting businesses and residents. Right now Highway 2 has four lanes of high speed traffic. traffic. deep building setbacks and limited access for new buildings with a general lack of sidewalks - in short, an uninviting environment for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and investors. The proposed downtown at 'Trulls and Highway 2 remains vacant. The questions that need to be answered are: How can the area be changed dramatically to become a more liveable and pedestrian friendly street? What kind of development is necessary and how can the critical businesses be lured to locate in the area? What realistically can be done to make this area unique? How can the presence of Black Creek become a major feature while being protected from development? The success of the study hinges on the involvement of the community. Those living and working in Courtice need to be partners ini creating the vision, developing guidelines and policy and in implementation. implementation. The implementation depends on developing a land use program that is both marketable and financially feasible. A preliminary Workshop was held on October 4 to identify issues, constraints and opportunities. This workshop was attended by a number of residents and land owners. The participants participants addressed how they wanted the area to look in twenty years, what existing features are important, what are some of the problems and what is needed to achieve success. The results of this first workshop will form the basis for another workshop that will be held in Courtice on November 20. This workshop will develop a vision for the area and identify a preferred option for the development of the Highway 2 Corridor and the Main Central Area. It is an exciting opportunity for peoplë living and working in Courtice to let the municipality municipality know what they would like to see happen. A Consultant Team consisting consisting of Markson Borooah Hodgson Architects, Totten Sims Hubicki, TCI Management Consultants and Valerie Cranmer & Associates has been hired to assist the municipality in the study.
