Thirty volunteers dug in last week Friday and Saturday morning, to remove all manner of debris from the ravine behind the downtown core, where the new trail is laid out. Friday's clean up had to be called off early due to lightning. Pat Lycett, spokesperson for the 'Friends of the Rutherford' Com mittee stated, "this just substantiates our view that there t is nothing like Orono." Jim Shaw is heading home from the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia with a gold medal to add to his collection. The 27-yea.r-old athlete from Newcastle made Canada proud by winning gold in the men's discus throwing event. Shaw's phenomenal distance was 39.57 meters! Four years ago, at the" 1996 Paralympic Games held in Atlanta, Shaw also earned a gold medal" in discus, as well as a gold in shotput and a bronze in javelin competitions. Shaw, who has cerebral palsy, was one of 161 Canadian athletes participating in the Paralympics this year. The games were the 11th summer summer games f Over 125 countries took part competing in 18 different sports. The Canadian team Finished Finished fifth overall, with our athletes bringing home a total of 96 medals: 38 gold, 33 silver; silver; and 25 bronze. Closing ceremonies, were held this weekend. Return of the Ballots Municipal ballots are beginning to trickle into the Clerk's Department. ■ Of the 48,000 eligible voters voters in Clarington, 2,100 have already filled in their Mail-in ballot, and either mailed them, or dropped them into the single single ballot box, in the Clerk's Department, at Town Hall.
