Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 22, 2000 3 60 //( to Jim & Ada Rutherford who celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on November 12, 2000 Newcastle Village Branch Library 10th anniversary celebration The Newcastle Village Branch of the Clarington Public library is having a celebration, celebration, and everyone is - invited. It was ten years ago that the branch opened in its present location, at 50 Mill Street N. in Newcastle Village. "With the move to the new location, we saw an increase in business at the branch overnight," says Linda Del Grande, Branch and Circulation Co-ordinator at the Clarington Public Library. "The branch is an integral and vibrant part of Newcastle Village, and this celebration is also a way for the Clarington Public Library to show thanks to the community community for their valuable support." Certainly Toronto Hydro is not, one would expect, a fly-by-night operation. operation. Further they are of a size that could bargain for a good price from the generators generators of hydro electric power. Through the new scheme of things Toronto Hydro could supply the power while the distribution distribution and billing would be carried out by Veridian Connections. Iri making our comparison comparison between the two services, services, we used our August bill. For the two month period period we used 1197 kWh which came to a total price of $108.38. If we should sign a contract contract with Toronto Hydro the cost of power for the 1197 kWh at 5.65 cents totals $67.63. It is billed through Veridian who then add the cost of transmission, transmission, distribution and Ontario Hydro debt charge. Veridian's telephone information centre sets a rate of 4.4 cents per kWh for these services and using our August bill consumption consumption of 1197 kWh would add a further amount of $52.86. The total of Veridian supplying the services and Toronto Hydro supplying the hydro energy comes to $120.28 some $12.00 more than we had paid in August for a two month supply of hydro here in Orono. Certainly there is no saving at this time, but there still is a lot of uncertainty at this time and it is likely to continue for some a time yet. Surely, it is far too soon to sign any contract for any period of time. Like a lot of new Ontario legislation, supposedly supposedly along the free enterprise line, has not been truly in the best interest of the general public. With cutbacks and down loading it appears as if the government at Queen Parks is not interested interested in governing. Pass it along to someone else. One exception, of course, a 42 percent pay raise. On this they didn't want to stand alone. Saturday Hikes Four Oak Ridges Trail hikes are being held this Saturday. Two moderate hikes, 3 hours.
