aT^Orono Weekly Timed, Wednesday, December I3, 2000 - 1U The Urinal by Myno Van Dyke I have had some unusual experiences involving urinals. Some years ago, when I was a police officer, I was assigned to a "Washroom Detail" at a local shopping mall. There had been complaints complaints of males frolicking sexually in the men's washroom, washroom, so a team of four officers officers was assigned to rectify the problem. The first step was to (legally) install cameras cameras inside the washroom area so that we could monitor the activity. Six cameras were installed in the ceiling using the "pin hole" lens technology. technology. Both stools and urinals were videotaped. We also put up signs "THIS AREA IS BEING VIDEOTAPED" and mounted an old broken video camera in front of the door. Now, you would think that this would deter people, but no one paid the slightest bit of attention to these things. Our technical crews went in first and installed the cameras and video recording equipment. We received our instructions - by phone. "Just go into the storage room next door, flick on the main camera switch and get to work." One evening, I noticed two young men, approximately approximately 15 years of age come in and - start urinating toward each other and onto the floor. I rushed into the washroom and explained to them the offence of mischief. I gave them the opportunity of resolving the situation immediately. I called the store cleaning staff and the youths were presented with a mop, a scrub brush and a pail of disinfectant and soapy water. In half an hour, the row of urinals was sparkling clean and the stools and floor were also looking and smelling much better. There were no phone calls to mom or dad, no long drawn out court case and no lawyers or probation officers. You can't beat instant justice. On another occasion I noticed a young boy grab hold of the end of a roll of toilet paper and run outside the washroom into the Furniture Department until he had completely unrolled it. 1 made him go back inside and carefully reroll. reroll. There were several trials and of course the public is always allowed to sit in and view the court proceedings. As luck would have it, one of the accused was scheduled for his trial after the first morning recess. When the Crown Attorney and 1 returned to the courtroom, we found it was full of Grade 8 children who had come with their teacher and some parents to view the Provincial Court system firsthand. firsthand. After explaining the nature of the case as well as the fact that we would be showing an explicit video, they were quickly ushered out by the teacher. Recently, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that videotaping people in washrooms washrooms was an infringement of Winter recreational program available ■ special needs Oshawa - Registration is now underway at Grandview Children's Centre for its after school and weekend recreational recreational programs for children and youth With special needs living in Durham Region.' While standing there 1 couldn't couldn't help but notice the debris in the urinal beside me. 1 wondered to myself, "What kind of pea-brain would throw a lot of paper towels in there?" Did he originally have them tucked into the front of his pants to prevent splash-over? After he finished finished his business, he must have just tossed them in there. I also noticed a toothpick. Can't you just picture some guy looking agape at what was going on down there and that toothpick dropping out of his mouth? Another urinal had a yellow lollipop, still in its plastic wrapper. Ah, if it was only the "Good Old Days." Then perhaps we would have a video of this.
