Q Orono Weekly Times. Wednesday. December 20. 2QQQ - 3 ^ The Nugents' driveway Friday morning, after clearing away Thursday snowfall. When the Nugents bought their home four summers ago, they had no idea what life on the ramp to the fast lane would be like in the winter. The Nugents live just south of the 7th Concession, one of the three homes on the southbound ramp onto the 115/35 I Iwy. Every time it snows the plows come down the Hwy, three abreast, and shove the snow over to the east side of the road. The clincher is, when the fourth plow comes around the ramp, it compacts the snow as it picks up momentum, and dumps it all on the Nugents' driveway. - It then takes the family upward of three hours to dig themselves out. On occasion, when the plows are going fast enough, snow will be thrown up against the front of her house, Mrs. Nugent claims. Since there is no shoulder on the side of the ramp, the Nugents can tackle • the windrow from only one side, and if they put snow back onto the ramp, they could be subject to a $2,000 fine Snow removal on provincial provincial highways in our area has bctn contracted 19 Southfork Aggregates. Roy Foster of Southfork, agrees it's a pain, but the snow has to go somewhere. somewhere. Of the three homes on the ramp, the Nugènts' house, is the only one that does not have access to the Kirby Church Road which runs behind the homes. Mrs. Nugent feels that when the improvements were made to the Hwy 115/35 fifteen fifteen years ago, provision should have been made providing providing access p the Kirby Church Road. If it weren't for the neighbours providing a turn around area on their property, the Nugents would have no alternative but to back out onto the ramp. Foster also agrees that the Nugents' driveway was a poor design, that the MTO should have put access on the Church Road. If the snow plow operators would lift their blade as they pass her driveway, Mrs. Nugent feels her situation would improve considerably. "If we lift the blade at the Nugent's driveway, it will leave snow on the pavement which will be a hazard," stated stated Foster. When the snow bank gets to a height of four or five feet, MTO will remove them, so residents along the Hwy have a clear view when exiting exiting their driveway. Till the banks are removed, the Nugents have no way of knowing what's coming around the bend until they are actually out on the road. Local Councillor Gord Robinson has been making inquiries on Mrs. Nugents' behalf, which have led him to the office of the local member of Provincial Parliament, Mr. O'Toole. O'Toole agrees that the Nugent's situation is very unsafe. He has spoken with ' the MTO people who look. after this corridor, whom O'Toole says are very good. These people are aware of the situation and are going to try and. find a longer range solution solution and get back to me before Christmas. In the meantime, Mrs. Nugent is not looking forward to a white Christmas: vc?
