The Joint Search Committee made an announcement regarding their selection for a new minister for the Orono-Kirby Pastoral Charge. Their choice was Rev. Dorinda Vollmer and she will begin her full-time duties on April 1, 2001. The first woman minister at the Orono- Kirby United Churches. Dorinda has been working as a Supply Minister for Orono-Kirby since July. Although she has never resided here, her mother's family, the Cuttell's, moved here in the mid 1850's. The book, Out of the Mists, by Helen Schmid and Sid Rutherford provides some history about the Cuttell family. family. In 1861, two brothers, John and James Cuttell began a printing business in Orono and in 1899 moved into the building where the Orono Weekly Times is today. Samuel Cuttell, was the founder and editor of the Orono News. He continued as its editor for more than 50 years- finally selling out to M.A. James and Son (owners of the Canadian Statesman) in 1935. The James' found the Orono News unprofitable and closed it. Then in 1937, Roy A. Forrester started the present present Orono Weekly Times which was later taken over by, his son, Roy C. Forrester. Samuel Cuttell also played in the Leigh Band and the Orono Citizens Band. He died in Orono at the age of 85. Church records show that Samuel and Margaret Cuttell were members of Orono United Church from 1920 until 1935. Floyd Cuttell, only child of Samuel and Margaret ,was a dentist in New York State. He was a trap shooter with the Orono Hunt Club and also played for the Orono Maple Leafs baseball baseball team in 1916. Mrs. Samuel (Margaret) Cuttell was involved in an important part of Orono's history. history. In 1923, she and Miss Margaret Walsh, representing the Orono Women's Institute obtained an option to pur chase a property in south-west Orono known as Buttercup Hollow from Mr. Stark for $850. This became the beautiful beautiful Orono Community Park which is still enjoyed immensely by the community. In 1973, the park was turned over to the municipality. James Cuttell and his wife Hattie (Locke) had one child, Alma. She was the secretary- treasurer of the Orono Park Board and according to Out of the Mists "her careful attention attention to the many details of its administration made it possible possible for the park board to offer the varied programs which meant so much to the recreation recreation of the citizens of Orono". For many years, Alma worked in Kay Lycett's law office. Alma was a member member of Orono United from 1920 until she died in 1990. Charles Cuttell was a member of the Orono Brass Band and a member of the "Blue Beech" baseball team in the early 1880's. Jessie Cuttell married Fred Williamson and they had a hardware store in the village. James Cuttell moved to Brooklin, Ontario around 1865 and started a newspaper there. James and his wife Maria (Courtice) had a son, Samuel James Cuttell and one of Samuel's daughter's was Marion Grace Cuttell. Marion is Rev. Dorinda Vollmer's mother. She is an exceptional exceptional pianist who studied with Canadian concert pianist Mona Bates in Toronto and later with Canadian composers composers Court Stone and Alexina Loui. She has written written poetiy, prose and articles for newspapers and sermons and has had two books published. published. She also has a passion for photography. Dorinda has a son, Warren, who is also a United Church minister. Warren and his wife Susan reside in Berwick, New Brunswick. Rev. Vollmer will also be moving into the church manse, built in 1882. "I do think we come full circle back to where we started and in this case, I feel something has been pulling me to Orono and Kirby." Dorinda said.
