Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 10,2001 Places I've Done Time Winter by Clifford Francis Winter Is sure a nice time of the year. This winter reminds me of the winters thirty or forty years ago. I was telling someone the other day about going to school years ago and I think the weather was colder. We walked to school, three or four miles, and If I remember correctly It was uphill both ways. The wind always blew every day and it blew all day long. The snowballs packed a lot harder back then and a lot of windows got broken. One time I walked into Pontypool and from a distance distance I saw another young fellow making snowballs to throw at me. I told him what would happen if he threw those snowballs at me and he threw them anyway. My glasses got broken and I pulled him out in the middle of the street and washed his face In dirty slush. He never threw another snowball again. I would walk along the old 35 Highway and touch the telephone lines because the snow would be that high. Lots of times my Dad worked for the Township and they had one truck and one grader with a snowplow on it. Some of the roads would be blocked for a week at a time especially the roads from the Sixth Concession north. Every farm had at least one hill to sleigh ride on and one tree to hit. I rode every hill around Enterprise and hit most trees. One tree that I hit really hard was at Enterprise Hill School and 1 still carry the scars. I was riding down the hill on an old car hood and I got cut badly . Forty stitches in the knee. It still hurts sometimes. One winter when there was a lot of snow I worked for a guy shoveling off roofs of houses. I fell off just about every roof I shoveled, but the snow was so deep 1 never got hurt. The man I worked for use to give me brown egg sandwiches sandwiches for lunch every day. He said they were good for my love life until he found out I liked his daughter. No more brown eggs. You know, I Still like them brown eggs. I had some today. I always wore rubber boots to school and I don't remember remember my feet being cold or maybe kid's feet just don't get cold. When we skated on the ponds we always sat on the edge and put our skates on and my toes never froze. When I think of the cold weather, I think about foods I like. A favourite of mine is hot black tea and bread with jam. A fellow that liked me very little took a swing at me, slipped on the ice, hit the bumper of a car and broke his nose. He still hates me. I hope winter does wonderful wonderful things to people. Neighbours help neighbours. Friends help friends. People that don't know each other help. Winter is nice. Especially where I live.
