Wednesday, Aprü 11. 2001 Staying in Touch by John O'Toole, MPP Saluting Our Local Heroes I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet so many of Durham Region's volunteers volunteers last week at the 2001 Ontario Volunteer Service Awards presentation. I regret that there is not space to list each person. However, Brenton and Jean Rickard deserve special mention mention as recipients of the 50- year volunteer service awards. Brenton is active in the Lions Club and Jean volunteers volunteers with the Horticultural Society. This year's deadline for nominations is May 2, 2001. If you or your organization organization would like to nominate someone, please contact the John O'Toole Constituency Office for further information. information. Essential visitors, such as family members returning home from Europe, are advised to wait two weeks before returning to the farm. It would also be wise to check with local agricultural organizations, the John O'Toole Constituency Office, or the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food for detailed advice on the full range of precautions to take. You can contact me at 1-800- 661-2433 or (905)-697-l 501. An information meeting organized for local producers and agri-businesses on preventing preventing foreign animal diseases diseases will take place on Thursday, April 12th, from 7 p.m. to 10 pm. in the Cambray Community Centre in Cambray, near Lindsay. In addition, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is making available warning signs that farmers are encouraged to post on buildings and property property to reduce the transmission of all animal diseases. Air Quality Preservation Late last month, Environment Minister Elizabeth Witmer announced strict emissions limits for power plants. Tire proposed caps would mean a 53 per cent reduction for nitrogen dioxide (which contributes to smog) and a 25 per cent reduction in sulphur dioxide (which contributes to acid rain.) These would drastically drastically reduce the limits on six fossil fuel plants owned by Ontario Power Generation. Minister Witmer also announced that the Lakeview Generating Station in Mississauga will be required to cease burning coal by 2005. This is part of a major,, overhaul of environmental standards- which will result in Ontario having standards that are among the strongest in North America. The provincial provincial commitment means updating or developing a total of 145 air quality standards. I am very pleased with this decision, as my constituents have raised issues concerning our environment and cleaner air. Reverend Dorinda Vollmer, the new minister for Orono and Kirby United Churches, invited friends and family to thank everyone for their assistance in her move to Orono. Over 150 guests attended including Dorinda's son, Warren and his wife Susan from New Brunswick as well as a large number of Dorinda's piano students who had completed their recital at the Orono church that day. There were also many friends in attendance from her previous congregations. Of course, many of her new friends in Orono and Kirby The newly appointed Clarington Agricultural Advisory Committee (CAAC) is one step closer to holding their first inaugural meeting. There was . local entertainment after the meal with Jennifer Hayward doing clog dancing, musical numbers by the Orono Junior Choir and the Orono Senior Choir. Janie Dodds and Karen Kastner sang a beautiful beautiful duet and there were hilarious hilarious stories by Isabelle Challice, Donna Morrison, Bonnie Reid and Myno Van Dyke. It was a wonderful evening and a tribute to all of the members of the community community that helped bring Dorinda Two representatives from Clarington's four wards were to be selected, representing the various farming interests in Clarington. Successful applicants to the Advisory committee are; Amot Wotten representing Ward One. Dave Davidson, Gary Jeffery, Ted Watson and Albert Werry from Ward Two, Tom Barrie, Bill DeVries, William Hasiuk and John Vaneyk from Ward Three, and Gerald W. Brown from Ward Four. Ward Four resident, Bert DeWitt, is the Durham Federation of Agriculture Representative to the Committee. Ward Four Councillor Gord Robinson was somewhat somewhat disappointed with the low applicant response, especially especially in his own Ward, which has a high rural component. Robinson attributes the lack of interest to the fact that farmers are busy already, and might have difficulty attending attending evening meetings. Robinson is aware that many issues farmers are facing facing today cannot be addressed at the local government government level. The first meeting of the CAAC will be held on Tuesday, April 24, at 7:00 p.m. in the Clarington council council chambers. Robinson hopes to move subsequent meetings out into the community community utilizing the community community halls in the outlying areas. The volunteer advisory committee has been established established to provide the Municipality with advice and recommendations on farm issues and concerns.
