Hydro One has found levels of soil contamination at their Hydro Distributing Station on Regional Rd. 42, just south of Taunton Rd. Trace amounts of arsenic trioxide, used in the '50s and '60s as a weed killer, have remained in the soil on site. Soil sampling will be carried out on neighbouring properties to determine what levels of toxins have migrated off Hydro property. If levels exceed acceptable limits, contaminated soil will be removed and replaced with clean topsoil. Judging by the slope of the land behind the Station, Hydro One Environment Specialist, Eric Trumbley says he would not be surprised if some of the toxins were discovered on the neighbouring neighbouring property. However, vegetation growing outside the Station's perimeters show no visible signs of stress, Trumbley indicated. John Thomson, who is also in favour of leaving the dam as is, wonders why the Ministry is ignoring their own findings in the Report which states that stabilization of water levels tends to reduce pond biodiversity. Also, the report says, periodic periodic flushing of the pond would improve water quality in. the pond by permitting accumulated, accumulated, sediments to proceed downstream instead of accumulating accumulating behind the dam. Thomson would rather see some local person hired to take responsibility of remov ing the stop logs when necessary. necessary.
