Pleading Innocence Tricia Zwart After having twice received some unwarranted, unwanted, unwanted, and somewhat exaggerated publicity in the past year, I, the slightly miffed daughter of the editor of the Orono Weekly Times would like to shed a little more light on the circumstances, provide a much needed correction of a few facts, and say a few words in my defense. When Mother's first editorial was published back in January, I should have seen it coming. After coming in to the shop after school that Tuesday, and then settling down at Mother's computer to proofread the fruits of her labour, I noticed my shiny, though much read Official Drivers ' Handbook sitting on the desk. However, I thought nothing of it. BIG mistake. Perhaps if I had made it an issue earlier that afternoon, a suitable case may have been made to nip the whole idea in the bud. It wasn't until several hours later when I realized that the habitually much anticipated editorial was already finished. I then recalled the Handbook, became suspicious, and asked to read the editorial. As I read, I bristled at phrases like, "...her hot little hands....," "Oh the wisdom of teenagers," and, "Teenagers; you've got to love 'em." l am an individual, individual, and to be stereotyped in such a manner was grossly offensive. In addition, the editorial stated that 1 had spent "a few pleasant days visiting a friend" in Woodville, and "called to inform [her] [I] would be ready to be picked up at 3:00 p.m." Um, no. Those days were spent busily doing research for a big science project that was due. And I politely asked her tp pick me up at a time that was convenient. It was also stated that she had to "exercise [her] authority over the radio dial." I don't think so. 1 can't touch that thing on a good day, nevermind the fact that I was sleeping in the passenger passenger seat. Amid groans of displeasure at being displayed in such a poor light, I prepared the film and cautioned my Mother against any similar proceedings in the future, thinking that my Clearly articulated warnings would be heeded. WRONG! ' Quite pleased with herself after receiving so much verbal feedback from the apparently popular editorial, which was almost unendurable, in June it was deemed appropriate to continue my driving saga. This time, the attempt to keep me from finding out beforehand was a little more effective, and by the time I did find out, I had time only to express my extreme disapproval. disapproval. To my credit, I can honestly say that contrary to editorial number two, I did not invent reasons to stay after school in order to drive home. I just conveniently remembered to bring my license to school everyday. And although I did hit the shoulder a few times, drove a little slowly, accidentally flashed my brights at a cop, and hesitated a few moments before pulling into the road, who could blame me for exercising exercising a little extra caution? Especially when I expected smug comments for anything that could be commented on. But summer has come, the wounds have healed, and with Drivers' Ed approaching, l am now able to wave without sending the car and its passengers off the road. I wish to personally thank all the members for all their hard work in making the parade the huge success it was. This was our 3rd annual parade, and I'm looking forward to many more.
