The skill and excitement of cattle penning has been added to the roster of things to see and do at this year's Orono Fair. Team Cattle Penning is said to be the fastest growing western horse sport in North America. It combines combines the speed and beauty of working horses with the uncertainty of a herd of cattle, cattle, and a bit of "the luck of the draw." A team of three riders are given 90 seconds to separate three specifically numbered cattle from a herd of thirty. After the cattle have been separated, they must be driven into a small pen located at the opposite end of the arena. Making things more difficult, no more than four cattle are allowed across the foul line at one time or the team is auto matically disqualified. There is a lot of skill and luck involved in this sport, says chairperson of the event at this year's fair, Sandra Dalzell. "Even if you're a good rider, that's not all you need," said Dalzell of Orono, in a phone interview with The Times last week. "It really helps to have good cow sense, and that's something you learn along the way." Because cattle are herd animals, animals, it can be difficult to isolate isolate one cow from its group of buddies, and not have the group follow along. Some days are better than others, says Dalzell, "You can have, everything going for your team, but then the cattle won't run for you. This truly is a team sport because one person could never do this alone. The sport demonstrates what magnificent athletes horses are, says Dalzell, who along with her husband and daughter participate in team penning almost every weekend weekend in the summer. Team penning has been' around for a long time, Dalzell says, and is gaining in popularity mainly because participants don't have to know how to rope, they just have to be able to ride a horse. Tire team penning event will be begin at 7 p.m. Friday evening, and is being brought to the Durham Central Fair by the Eastern Ontario Team Penning Association. Entries in the three classes - junior, 7, and open class, must be made before 6 p.m. on site. From Around Home by Roy Forrester Over the past couple of Issues of the Times I have found interesting comments comments by Henry Sissons and Dorothy Payne regarding regarding the Orono Mill Pond at the south end of the village. Indeed there is a form of history in the pond being, at one time, the source of energy for a flourishing flourishing grist and flour mill operation and yes it provided provided the cooling agent for the old ice box. I can't really remember that it was a local swimming swimming hole and possibly that was due to the fact that the Orono Park, even before my time, had a swimming pool. It was always a chilly dip. Certainly the pond has had its' day but time, it is stated, always marches on ' and there is always changes and a future. When many see the silting silting in of the pond, the growing of water plants and the shallow depth it is as if the end of the pond is near. It may be so. . But at the present time it is providing a haven for a number of our water birds. - Never have I seen so many adult and young Mallard ducks and the shy Wood ducks who are now calling the pond home. These 'puddle' ducks, love it when they can tip and turn their tail skyward to then stretch their bill to the bottom for green water plants- On a couple of recent visits they have been having having a hay-day even chum- 50 years age this week.. Cold storage facility on the cutting edge The Durham Co-operative Ltd. opened their new cold storage facility in Newcastle at the cost of $225,000, The building, which still operates today, contains 220,000 cu. feet of cold storage storage space, insulated with cork, which cost the Co-op $28,622. On entering the front door, reports the Orono Weekly Times of July 26th, 1951, "A large well-fumished office with built-in safe, meeting the eye. Then the spacious receiving and shipping room with its two-tone green walls and" bright fluorescent lighting. lighting. Back of this is an unbelievably unbelievably large cold storage room which will hold many thousands of barrels of apples and other fruits, eggs, chickens chickens and other fann produce." According to the Department of Agriculture representatives present at the opening, the Durham Cooperative Cooperative Storage Plant was truly a massive building and will make this district a leader in the fruit growing industry. RECYCLE ing up the water from their individual groups. It is not that often that one sees a couple of nestings nestings of Wood ducks in such a small area. The Woodies' are there and when mature they are one of our colourful colourful ducks. A pair of Kingfishers are finding the fishing not that bad and have, so far, spent the summer at the pond and there has been proof of their success.' We have not seen any young. It is the same case with a couple of shorebirds which we have reasoned had to be Least Sandpipers. They have been enjoying the small, skimpy area of a mud fiat. The delight of the .week came last Wednesday afternoon afternoon when an ORTA hike , of thirty-five hikers were on the local trails.
