From Around Home v by Roy Forrester For this article I'll have to take you back a month in time. It's not that you are going to gain anything as to your age, plus or minus, but rather it was the launci i of a birding outing outing for some 35 kilometers through t tie Carden Alvar. The Alvars are globally rare habitats supporting threatened and ed species. many endanger Vegetation is restricted by shallow soils and outcrops of limestone. Dwn and not spend time at the Sedge Wren marsh. We were in luck with two such birds appearing over a period of a half hour. Possibly the smallest of all birds. t The marsh is also home to bull frogs, all with deep deep base calls. The tour also pointed to a small colony of Purple Martins which have been off my list for a number number of years. Our sighting included HAPPY BIRTHDAY! three Osprey nesting along a causeway near Dalrymple Lake. They no doubt were encouraged to nest in the area by the man-made platforms. The best time to make the tour is during the month of June but you can edge this earlier or later. A twenty page booklet for this driving trip is available available through the Corporation of the County of Victoria, P. O. Box 9000, Lindsay, Ontario K9V 5R8. Although we took most of the day to travel the full trail a lot can be seen in the first 6 kilometers. Don Lycett doing g all I had to do l.
