Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 1, 2001 - 7 Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis A few weeks ago I painted the old service station on the comer Of Main and Station Streets. Lots of people stopped to chat and that's right up my alley. It took a long time to paint and I lost money but some interesting people dropped by. One such chap was a young fellow who stopped to inquire if I knew where he could find a "bootlegger". For those who don't know what a bootlegger is, it's someone who sells alcohol illegally, without a licence. It saddened me to have to tell him that I didn't know any bootleggers in the area. There was a time when I knew every bootlegger in this and several areas around. When bars started to sell liquor, bootleggers started to dwindle. Bootleggers seemed to do their best business on Saturday and Sunday nights. And every one seemed to charge the same price. Double the price of beer, wine or spirits. Their morals were about the same too. If you were underage they would sell you something to drink and then send you on your wày. If you were of drinking age sometimes you could stay and drink. Some towns had more , than one bootlegger and even little places like Ballyduff and Manvers Station had one and sometimes more. Pontypool seemed to have a surplus. I remember a couple of women bootleggers, also. One woman I remember appeared in court and told the judge she bootlegged not for the money but she liked the company. The judge recommended recommended that she serve lemonade. Another gentleman I knew kept on selling after he was caught until he had enough money to pay his fine. As I think back I never had much of a problem with bootleggers. bootleggers. Well, maybe a couple of times. Once I was thrown out for being somewhat unruly but that turned into being a lucky break as the joint was raided that night and everyone everyone there was charged with being a "found in". Everyone paid a small fine except me. Another time I had a falling out with a bootlegger and it wasn't over booze at all. I was skulking around the street in Pontypool when this gentleman stopped and started to have a chat with me. He said that we was the new minister coming to town and he would be tending the flock at the church. He wondered wondered if I might know where the leader of the United Christian Women might be. I didn't know, being young and all, but by trying to be helpful helpful I got into all kinds of trouble. trouble. She lives right up the street sir. I took him right up to where the bootlegger lived. I waited on the street and he knocked on th e door. When she answered the door they talked for a minute and he pointed at me. She looked at me ?hid then started started to curse, hhe called the minister every foul word she could think of and I ran away. That fall I helped a farmer harvest his pumpkins and turnips and I had another run in with the bootlegger. We were hauling the produce produce from one farm to another another and he stopped to talk to her. When she saw me on the load of turnips she went into another tirade about me and the minister. I got tired of listening listening to her and threw a turnip in her direction. It struck her in the gut and knocked her into the ditch. She got up and ran to get her shotgun and we went quickly quickly pn our way. , The neighbours told me later she waited in the ditch for us for two days. We took a different route and when I got old enough to drink it didn't matter how dry I was we never went to her house. Sunday was always fun. A bunch of us would form a bit of a posse and go to the bootleggers bootleggers at Osaco. When liquor stores started opening on Sunday that was the end of bootlegging. Another true and honest profession gone by the way- side. •Auto & Spring Work •Body Work •Painting • Reasonable Rates 27 Sandbourne Drive, Unit D, Pontypool, Ont.
