, f 6 - Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 7, 2001 A penny went far at Tyrone last week Wednesday at the United Church Womens' Penny and Bake Sale. The baked goods were priced a bit higher than a penny, but Jean Slemon and Carol Southwell had no problem selling the large variety of items donated for the sale. From Around Home by Roy Forrester This çolumn centers around a debate, some might have called it a 'low heat* argument with the two Bills, Bunting and Perry-man. The debate happens almost daily over coffee at the Orono Cafe. The subjects, however, vary considerably from one day to another. But on this instance it was' over the location of "Lookout Hill" and "Tower Hill" in the Ganaraska Forest. Truly it was not difficult difficult to agree that Lookout Hill was on the east side of the unopened Carscadden Road and Tower Hill directly directly opposite on the west side of the roadway. So with that out of the way a little history was beginning to spill out on the purpose and use of the two names. Lookout Hill self-names its purpose. It was a point to look out over the countryside. countryside. In fact, at one time a rather substantial raised two-tiered platform was erected to improve the experience of grandeur of the country side. Unfortunately, vandalism vandalism of the structure outpaced outpaced repair budgets and as so often happens safety became the prime issue. It resulted in the dismantling of the structure;. But Lookout Hill is well, known locally as the site of a plane crash some 53 years ago on Sunday, September 19, 1948, in which pilot Leslie Banner, age 28, lost his life and left a wife and two children. The Orono Times locates the crash on a farm then owned by Wm, Curtis, a little south-east of Lookout Hill. The article also stated that Wesley and Bill Tebble were eyewitnesses eyewitnesses of the crash. Banner, a member of the RCAF, was piloting a Vampire Jet, the first such jet aircraft used by the Canadian Air Force. It was a small jet suited for fighter fighter operations at that time. He had earned a Distinguished Service Order for his service overseas. overseas. At the time of the accident accident the Banner jet and two others were returning to their base in Trenton from a Niagara air show and race. They were flying below the cloud ceiling with visibility hampered with mist and rain. After crossing the lake they were turning towards Trenton along the lakeshore. The Banner jet was on the inside of the turn and hence at a lower altitude than the other two aircraft. The accident left a siz- Kendal Community Centre news Kendal Community Centre has a lot of events planned for the coming months. Banner had also performed performed with the Trenton team at the C.N.E. in Toronto. Due to the discussion over coffee I was out hiking the area on Sunday and did enter the former site of the Lookout platform. My attention was immediately attracted by a large beautiful beautiful potted Mum plant in full bloom. This directed me to the files at the Orono Times and the papers of 1948 to find that the plane crash had taken place on Sunday, September 19th. Editor Marg then directed me to an article in the Orono Times three years ago in which she had had contact with a grandson grandson of Leslie Banner. He had sought out information as to his grandfather and tried to visit the site, Lookout Hill, annually. I suppose we should invite Marg to our coffee sessions to just keep up with the most recent news. Next week - Tower Hill. Whether councillors in fact think input from the public is valid and important, or whether it is merely tolerated." Markland suggested that a draft agenda be available for public scmtiny for at least four weeks in advance of a meeting, meeting, with the clear proviso that changes may be made at any time. This suggestion, according to Mayor Mutton, "is not workable." Administration staff, according to the Mayor are already burdened with their existing workload. He suggested Markland talk to the staff, "they will show you exactly what they have to go through." "In my opinion we should keep the old procedural bylaw," bylaw," Mutton stated, "we shouldn't be tampering with it. After the discussion Mayor Mutton made the motion that the amended procedural bylaw bylaw be referred back to staff for review and to address the public's concerns. W MORRIS FUNERAL CHAPÉL LTD.
