Orono Town Hall Volume 65, Number 47 GST Included Wednesday, November 28,2001 Serving Kendal, Kirby, Leskard, Newcastle, Newtonville, Orono, Starkvilie and Tyrone since 1937 Mutton looks to Province for sewer funding Mayor Mutton will personally personally appeal to David Lindsay, Chair of the SuperBuild, to change the funding criteria as it relates to the Orono sewer situation. Current SuperBuild legislation legislation does not provide for water and sewage treatment infrastructure infrastructure in the GTA says Miitton. The whole of the GTA is treated as an urban centre, not recognizing that many municipalities within the GTA contain rural villages and hamlets. Mutton is hoping that SuperBuild will fund the sewage pipe to come up from Newcastle to Orono. The sewage treatment facility at the lake in Newcastle was built oversize to accommodate Orono's sewage whenever development north of Newcastle reached a stage where it would not be cost prohibitive to extend the sewage pipe to Orono. A recently completed sur vey of the sewer systems in th downtown core of Orom found that 54 of the 92 proper ties surveyed might requin holding tanks in the future dui to inadequate space. The sur vey identified a possibli sewage breakout situation ii one location. Weekly samplings wen taken from the Wilmot Creel in May 2000 to mid October o that year. High levels of con taminant flow after each rail fall were traced to an upstrearr - farm where a stockpile o: manure was situated too close to the creek. Based on the informatior supplied in the sewer study, the Regional Work? • Department did not recommend recommend the use of a communal 1 sewer system in Orono. because they felt it was not necessary. ■ (continued page 3)
