Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 13, 2002 - 9 (continued from page 8) researchers be predisposed to encourage abortions due to the need to access human embryos? The science community community has noted that human embryos from a fetus represent some of the best organisms for their research. They contain cells that are easily transformed transformed to other areas of the human anatomy. The science community holds out the promise of massive massive discoveries, which could eradicate many tragic diseases in humans. It was with this in mind that the Canadian Institute of Health issued its research guidelines. These guidelines apply, to research that received government or public sector funding. While we can have the debate at this level, it seems somewhat absurd to apply a standard on public research, while there is no similar standard applied to private research. This is what the Americans have done. They have applied one rule to the private sector, (essentially no rules), and a set of rules to the public sector that refers to the use of existing human cells. In other words, you cannot cannot add to the inventory. It is clear we must have some form of rules regarding this area of research. The debate need not be polarized. Unfortunately, there are many who take an absolute position on the use of human embryos, both for and against. Some also suggest the benefits of scientific research are unproven. I suppose this is so, but then again, I believe this is the nature of research. The Institute of Health has said that embryos created by cloning cannot be used. There must be consent by the providers for use of such embryos and there must not be direct or indirect financial benefit benefit to a provider. Imported embryos must also meet this test. Finally, the Institute of Health is seeking to establish a tribunal of health officials to oversee that these standards are being met. But clearly it is up to legislators legislators to ultimately define the relevant guidelines. The fear of course is that if we are overly overly strict, we as a country may miss out on the opportunities that may come from successful disease prevention. For this reason, I think we should take the time to get it right. The British have developed a much more aggressive position position which also applies to the private sector. I believe the 1 5 5 British way is a better way to go because the United States seems to relish in a two-tiered medicine, one for private industry, and one for the public sector. As this debate unfolds it will be important we strike the balance between all of these views. Sometime ago the Orono Athletic Association was looking for a fundraiser to help the building fund pay off the mortgage on the new addition to the Arena. Lots of people play cards. Let's have a euchre tournament tournament someone said. It started slowly and has gained momentum ever since fifteen tables went to twenty-five twenty-five and thirty tables have now reached forty. How far can it go? No one knows for Sure. All this has not been reached without a lot of volunteers volunteers and help. Should I try and name a few? They work hard from the time they start making platters of sandwiches sandwiches and cookies, settingup the tables and chairs, until the last dish is washed and the last table is put away. People come from Toronto to Belleville, Pontypool to Fenelon Falls, and everywhere everywhere in between. The next tournament is on April 13th at seven o'clock. Come and bring someone. Fifteen games of euchre for ten dollars with coffee, tea, soft drinks and lots to eat after the games, the price is right. Half the proceeds go back out in prize money. Lots of door prizes too. On Saturday, May 11 there is a mega tournament that will start at 10 o'clock in the morning. The next set of games will start at 2:30 in the afternoon with the last set starting at 7 o'clock in the evening. This mega tournament tournament will be held on the floor of the Arena. Hopefully there will be a new attendance record set that day. Would a hundred tables be a possibility? I would think so. Let's all get behind this good cause. If you can't come maybe give a door prize. That would be nice. To donate call Allin Orchards at 905-987- 2295 or leave it at the Arena Office and our fine arena manager, Peter Maartense, will look after it. Hope to see lots of people out to both tournaments and good luck!
