Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 13, 2002 - 7 From Around Home by Roy Forrester Last week we reported the plight of the Red Poles that have come In from the. north to spènd the winter only to suffer from a growing death rate due to a form of disease. Bill Bunting states it has been announced that the deaths are due to food poisoning poisoning caused by infection with salmonellae. This may help some but what can one do to guard against another outbreak next year. Cleanliness may be the key word and certainly do not allow bird droppings and such seed as niger seeds to mix, which does happen with the silo feeders when the feed falls to the ground with the droppings. The Red Poles also make a habit of feeding out of this mix. On to better things on which to report. Don Lycett reports an interesting trip to the lake front at Newcastle viewing a flock of Snow Geese who no doubt are on their way to the far northern tundra for a family reunion and the raising raising of another family. He was fortunate in sighting a flock of Bohemian Waxwings in the Newtonville area. A little more colourful than the Cedar Waxwings and an inch longer. It also has a grey breast. These birds have been reported on a number of occasions over the past couple of weeks. Don also reports Homed Larks in the Newtonville area. If it ever warms up they will be on their way north. Reports have been coming coming in on sightings of Robins and male Red Winged Blackbirds for the past couple couple of weeks. On Sunday driving along the ' lakefront with Don Lycett we sighted numerous sizeable flocks of the male Red Wings. Within the next couple of weeks similar large flocks of the females will be making their appearance. Also on Sunday we enjoyed the sighting of a pair of Bufflehead ducks in a small pond surrounded with bush. They made a cute couple couple and we will be back to see if they remain in what appears a suitable habitat. This was followed by the sighting of a Broadwing Hawk along a bush edge. It is not that often that one gets to see this bird. Presqui'le Park is holding holding their duck watch this weekend and the following weekend.. Sighting , stations are manned to assist visitors in identifying the various species that always visit Presqui'le this time of year. There is a charge of $5.00 a car but if you are interested in birds it is well worth the price. It's a little over an hour's drive to the site. In all likelihood this weekend would be the better of the two as the birds have been a little earlier this year due to the warmer weather a few weeks ago. Vivid colour is being displayed displayed by male Mallard Ducks at the Orono Mill Pond. It's the mating season with the boys in full colour. Closer to home. You are invited to be part of two hikes, let's call them walks, on Sat., March 23 and Saturday, March 30. Don Lycett takes the March 23 event assembling at the 115 parking lot just south of the Hwy. 35 at 10 a.m. On March 30 Ester Allin starts her walk at 9:30 a.m. starting from the parking parking lot at Stephen's Gulch. Turn south on Bethesda Road at Ayren Links golf course and east on the first road to the lot.
