Orono Weekly limes, Wednesday. April 3, 2002 - 5 S PO R TS Orono Juveniles defeated in finuls The Dufferin Aggregate sponsored Orono Juveniles played their final game of the 2001/2002 season on Friday in Dresden. For Dresden, it definitely was Good Friday and so it was for Orono.'s Juvies. To lose out to a strong team such as Dresden is not an indicator that Orono was a weak team - far from it. In regular season and playoff games, Orono's record was 26 wins, 9 losses and 2 ties. Not . too shabby. Dresden's first goal came late in the first as a result of a non-call at the blue line which allowed a 2 on 1 and a screen shot that eluded Orono's Dusty Stapleton. Early in the second, Orono had what looked like the tying goal, but the Dresden goalie stopped Rob Milford on a wraparound wraparound with a goal line glove save. Dresden's second goal, a power play goal, came on thé third shot of a goal mouth scramble. Orono never gave up playing strong, clean hockey, hockey, but the bounces were few and far between. The bounces we did get were quickly neutralized neutralized by the blanket defence of the OMHA Juvenile C-CC champions from Dresden. The final goal was an empty netter with 29 seconds remaining. Members of the OMHA Juvenile C-GC finalists from Orono are: #3 Kyle Widmeyer, #4 Adam Toilet, #5 Tyler Knight (C), #6 Jake Bonnette, #7 Greg Rester (A), #9 Ricky Howe, #10 Jamie Parry (A), #14 Derek Heerschop, #16 Matt Zawislak, #17 Otto Akeson, #23 Bob Witheridge, #27 Jimmy Con boy, #37 Dusty Stapleton (goal), #40 Scott Webb, #81 Scott Poole (goal), #82 Phil Fracz, #88 Ryan Homes, #92 Jeremy Czechowski, #94 Rob Milford; Head Coach, Jim Knight; Trainer, Rick Howe; Manager, Brian Poole; Asst. Coach, Henry Heerschop. On behalf of the parents and fans, I would like to thank the players and coaching staff for proving that Juvenile hockey is not a beer league full of goons and that hockey at this level has a place in Orono. -Dong Stapleton Problast topped by s The Problast Peewees faced off with Hooper's Trophy in round robin play. On March 21, Orono played against Newcastle and lost in the last 41 seconds. Orono's only goal was scored by Denis Beenen, assisted by Michael Whelan. This was a very close game. Coaching staff designated two boys to shut down Newcastle's top player and they did an awesome awesome job. Good job, Jamie and Denis. On the 23rd, IGA played against Hooper's, winning 4- 1. Jamie Stevens and Cam Delorme had a pair of goals with assists to Dustin Armstrong, Denis Beenen, Brent Burpee and Heather Maitland. The goalkeepers, Andrew Fudge and Michael Hisson, kept the Leafs in the game with outstanding saves. On Sunday March 24, the Leafs battled against Mr. Sub. The Leafs won 6-0, but the stick-work and the penalties got out of hand, there were four penalties for Orono and nine for Mr. Sub, including two game suspensions. Other than that, the Leafs are playing playing just great. Passing is a big key to the Peewees game right now. Assists went to Cam Delorme (3), Denis Beenen and Dustin Armstrong. Super game, guys! On March 27, the Leafs squared off with OPG. This was a physical game. OPG is a big team with lots of hard hitting players, but that didn't stop the Leafs. Orono got physical, but kept focused on the game of hockey and took a 3-0 win. This shut out was due to the good goaltending by Michael Flisson and Andrew Fudge. Orono goals were scored by Justin Westerink (who got a pair) and by Michael Whelan who delivered a big slap shot goal. Assists went to Denis 'forgot- my-shinpads' Beenen, Cam Delorme (2) and Justin Westerink. -LB Can't see ! a way i DUt ? ; • HP
