THAT'S A WRAP - Players from Orono's Atom Leafs wrapped up a season of great hockey last week and enjoyed themselves after their final game at a karaoke party IGA Peewees are A" Champs The Orono Leafs pulled it off to become the "A" champs in Division 3. These kids showed what team work can do for a hockey hockey club. We won just one game in the regular season, had nine ties and every loss was by a single goal - which shows we had what it takes, but we had a hard time finishing finishing it off. The Leafs were definitely a tournament and a playoff team. The Leafs were a 500- plus team by the end of the year. Not enough can be said about our goaltending this year. Michael Hisson and Andrew Fudge were huge factors factors in our team's success. The Leafs' defence was also solid. Michael Whelan, Brent Burpee, Kevin Bourke and Brock McGill came out to play every game and did a great job. Coach Jim Hisson •worked the defence all year. His knowledge of the game and his ability to coach kids brought the Leafs' defence to be very hard to score on. Thanks to Jim Hisson. Mike Whelan, in his first year as head coach, did an awesome job. Mike ran great practices this year -fun and at the same time, disciplined. The kids really gelled with Mike and made his job very rewarding. Thanks, "Coach Mike" for a great season. Trainer Leo Beenen had a good year without too many injuries - nothing an ice pack or a few bandages and a pep talk didn't fix. I'd like to thank Dave Armstrong for his help in the practices. The manager this year did a great job. We had four tournaments, lots of fund-raising and an awesome party for the kids at the end of the year. Thanks a lot to Angie Beenen and a special thanks to Katelynn and Michelle Whelan for their computer skills and help in making stuff for the team. To the parents: this season wouldn't have been a success without the time and money you put out. Thanks to all the moms and dads. Now that I have thanked everyone in Orono, a special note to the Orono Times. The Oronp Times makes our hockey very special by allowing allowing the hockey articles free of charge. These kids love to see their names and their accomplishments accomplishments in black and white. Thanks to Armstrong IGA for their sponsorship. A few weeks ago, a special highlight was missed in the paper. Rookie of the year, John Mitchell was awarded a penalty shot. John didn't score, but got to feel the adrenaline rush of this rare opportunity. John was also nominated' for the "Adam Rate". This is reward for a rookie who has played to the best of his ability. John got his first career goal, a penalty shot, and he improved greatly. Good luck, John. Many great things could be said about each and every player this year. We had a disciplined disciplined club in the dressing room as well as on the ice. Thanks kids. On behalf of the coaching staff, it was an honour honour to coach a great bunch of kids like yourselves. Game #1 in the best two out of three series was played April 4 in Bowmanville. The Leafs came out hitting hard against OPG. The first goal was by Jamie Stevens, unassisted. unassisted. Second goal: again by Jamie - assisted by Kevin Bourke and goaltender Andrew Fudge. Justin Westerink scored the third goal, assisted by Cam Delorme, The final goal came on a great effort by defence- man Kevin Bourke with assists going to Westerink and Delorme. The final score was 4-2 for the Leafs. Game #2 was in Bowmanville. The Leafs won the game and the series. The only goal was scored by Cam Delorme and assisted by Justin Westerink.
