Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 15. 2002 - 9 Places I've Done Time The Coffin by Clifford Francis I first met Harry White thirty-five years ago. He came to the tree nursery where I was working to buy some trees to plant. "Give me a fast growing tree," he said. "How about some poplar trees?" I said. "They are no damn good for anything," he drawled. Harry finally settled on some spruce and a few cedar. After he had loaded his truck we had a small chat. He lived near Barry's Bay and had some land south of Bancroft where he would plant the trees. Harry had come up from North Carolina with his dad fishing and fell in love with Canada. He moved up in 1945 after the war. Every year Harry would show up and buy a few trees and once in a while I would see him at the Kawartha Downs horse races in Peterborough. I always looked forward to seeing him. He always igàve me a large jug of "com". A little little sip of com in moderation never hurt anyone he would say. About 1975 he invited me to come and take a look at his trees and fish with him. What a good pleasant time I had and everytime after it was nice to go and visit. Harry and "mother" as he called her, and myself most times would fish and talk about North Carolina and growing tobacco with his father when he was young. As long as I knew Harry he never really worked at anything. anything. Harry built lovely things RECYCLE out of wood. Saturdays he took "mother" to town shopping shopping and Sunday he took her to church and picked her up. He never went himself. The rest of the week he pretty well did as he pleased. Doing woodwork and sipping com whisky kept him busy. After supper he would get out the banjo and play a few times. He sounded good to me. Harry had three sons. They were a surly unpleasant unpleasant lot. Harry claimed that being professional people and going to school half their lives and not living like normal folks made them that way. They certainly didn't care for me and told me so in no uncertain terms. In my way I told them it was fine by me and I cared for them less. When Harry's wife died he was like a lost soul for a while and then he went back to building things. "I am going to build a coffin for myself he said." Each time I went to see him, Harry would bring out the coffin and we would inspect it. He was so proud of it and would say his body had been good to him and he wanted to be be laid away in really good wood and it would be. When it was done it was beautiful. It was made of mahogany wood planks, hand sanded and hand polished. polished. The inside was burgundy burgundy lined and there were hand carved handles for carrying carrying it, with a brass hinged lid with his initials on it. "I want it nice," Harry said. "I am going to be there a long time." Harry died healthy in his sleep on April 12th one day after his 87th birthday. He is now lying snug in one beautiful coffin.
