\ Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, June 5, 2002 - 3 From Around Home by Roy Forrester I will set aside the subject of birds for this week even though Don Lycett and I did some really well-timed detective detective work and successfully sighted and located two young, snow-white, Red Tail Hawks in their nest. You can add to this a possible sighting of a Mocking Bird which by no means happens on a weekly weekly basis or even monthly. I do want to, through this column, thank the members of council in honouring me as Clarington's Senior Citizen of the Year. I had no inkling of the appointment and thus it was a surprise when I heard the news from Marg Zwart of the Orono Times. I have to say Marg does take good pictures possibly being somewhat assisted by all the new technology in photography. photography. It ain't like it use to be. I saw a print within seconds of the click of the camera. . I also appreciated the comments comments I've received since the appointment. It makes one think back to the past of the events in which one was involved. Of course, being in the newspaper business business has it's advantages, placing placing you in one way or another next to the front line. It has been interesting and at times uplifting to see ideal words blossom out into a somewhat major accomplishment. accomplishment. I walk by one such accomplishment accomplishment almost daily in downtown Orono. It's the Clarke Public Library building building and grounds. The grounds especially were an eye sore and the building in need of repair. While walking with Ray Dickson along side the property property some years ago. he commented commented to something like, "what a shame for this historic building in the middle of the Village'. . It was at a time when new quarters was being sought for the Orono Library which was operated by a group of women in the community. The library had been moved from site to site over a period of a few years r Letters to the Editor Shame on the PM Dear Editor: Prime Minister Chretien delivering a speech Saturday evening at the Press Gallery dinner remarked jokingly that, while he was happy to be at the dinner, in order to attend he "had to turn down an invitation invitation to visit Kabul (Afghanistan), and sent his Finance Minister Paul Martin instead." Due to the feud between the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Finance, there's no other way of interpreting this than that the Prime Minister found it an amusing thought to send Paul Martin to Kabul to rid himself of any potential problems. Kabul is a dangerous place these days, and I think it terri- Again, it was a time for change, a new era. as we so often see and for the library, new provincial legislation had been passed making it possible for expansion in the Orono Village. The Waddell property at the comer of Mill and Centre streets met with approval both by Clarke Township and the Orono Police Tmstees who had joined forces in the new venture. A reasonable selling price by Rena Waddell and the gifted gifted workmanship of Horace Haunch quickly saw the stature of the library building and property elevated taking on a new air of prestige in the community. It is most deserving deserving of its central placèment in the Village. This is such that you look back on and feel a sense of contribution to your community. community. RECYCLE No Respect Dear Editor: It was with utter dismay that I read last week's Letter to the Editor. To praise Mr. Francis for his writing is awful. I would think he is a morbid soul. Hardly a month goes by that he doesn't write about the dead. We wish you the happiest birthday ever. Love from all your family Last weekend, Bob invited his friends over to help lacquer his floors. It was a blast „c s<ARy, The vapours from ; ç flammable solvents can ■ ' ■"'■■} t jp\||§.- '%4CQtM/ i) easily ignite if they come £& , into contact " • with sparks or open flame. They should only be used in well ventilated areas that are free from all ignition sources - including pilot lights. bly inappropriate for the Prime Minister who sent Canadian soldiers to fight a war in Afghanistan to then make offhanded jokes about the dangerous nature of the region. Shame on the Prime Minister. If there's some secret contest contest these days between the Leader of the Alliance Party and Liberal leader's to see who can make the most distasteful remarks, Chretien's joking about danger in Afghanistan raises the stakes over Harper's "Atlantic Canadians are defeatists" remark. Yours truly, Tom O'Brien Oshawa,On Not long ago he took grept pleasure in writing about someone's ashes that he used to get his car up the driveway in the winter. Has he never lost a loved one? Maybe he should show a little little respect for those who have gone to the great beyond. Sincerely, Lee Anne Sneall Peterborough Happenings Saturday.
