; Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, ; June 5,2002 Staying in Touch Police Association Loses Outstanding Leader Ontario's 13,000 front-line police personnel lost a friend and an outstanding leader last week. Terry Ryan, Chair of the Police Association of Ontario, died Friday, May 31, in a tragic car accident. He spent over 20 years on the Board of Directors of the Durham Regional Police Association, and was first elected president in 1993. He championed safer communities communities for both the men and women of Ontario's police departments and the communities communities they serve. Our thoughts are with his family and the members of the Police Association of Ontario in a loss that is both shocking and sad. Opposition Blocks Durham University Bill Naturally, I am disappointed disappointed that opposition parties at Queen's Park did not see fit to allow the unanimous consent v needed for the passage of Bill 139, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Act. It is the opposition's job to represent the other side of the debate whenever important issues are raised. However, to / JE8» John O'Toole refuse to co-operate in passing passing the legislation to establish a new university in Durham Region is canying partisan politics too far. This Bill creates thousands of new spaces for students in the double cohort year and beyond. I do not understand how the same opposition politicians who attack the government for failing to fund post secondary institutions can refuse to co-operate in the speedy passage of Bill 139, along with other very necessary necessary pieces of legislation introduced last week concerning concerning post secondary opportunities opportunities in Ontario. The community has worked long and hard to make the case for the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). In blocking this worthwhile worthwhile project, the opposition is playing politics with the post-secondary students of Ontario. I wish the opposition MPPs who argue against the university would explain themselves to the parents, students, students, businesses community, and educators. All of us are depending on the university to open its doors on schedule in September 2003. I remain confident we will find a way to pass the Durham University Bill this session. However, this is one project that deserves co-operation in support of post-secondary students. students.
