Page 6 â€" Great Canadian Town Band Festival â€" June 14-16, 2002 1 "Sig's" as they are affec- tionately known, have been performing for audiences throughout Canada and the United States since 1926. Originally known as the 2nd Signal Regiment, this band was the first to inaugurate the one valve trumpet (since moving to a two valve), along with the bell lyre into the trumpet and bugle band pro- gram of that era. Continuing to lead in their field, this band also introduced to the Canadian audience, the sound of three-part harmony in trumpet band music. The "Sig's", then were known as the 2nd Armoured Divisional Signals Regiment. Subsequent changes in the merging of 2nd and 8th Signals Regiment, brought about the name of the Toronto Signals Regiment. In 1959 the band left the Canadian Army to form the famed Drum Corp "Canada's Marching Ambassadors" who where well known in Canada and the United States. Since the inte- gration of the Canadian Armed Forces in the late 1960's, "Sig's" have carried on as a voluntary organiza- tion, maintaining the rich tra- dition and heritage of their former members, and today still march as duty band to the 709 (Toronto) Communications Regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces. This band has participated in many events in both Canada and the United States. Participation in the Coronation Ceremonies for Her Majesty the Queen held in our capital city of Ottawa. They were the only Canadian Band to appear three times in the 4th of July Independence Day Celebrations in Milwaukee Wisconsin, Canada's Centennial Celebrations touring Northern Ontario as part , of the forces "67" contingent. His Worship the Mayor and Council for the City of Toronto bestowed the honor of "Signals Trumpet Band Day" with a presentation of keys to the City on the occa- sion of their 50th year. Invitations have been extend- ed to participate in the Mace's Parade in New York, the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, and the Edinborough Tattoo in Edinborough, Scotland. The band has the distinct honor of being chosen the Canadian National Exhibition Warriors Day Parade Champions on 20 occasions since 1969; an award usually reserved for precision drill teams and never before won twice by any other unit. Since the bands inception in 1926, they have won more then 200 awards, and have been acclaimed "Canada's Marching Ambassadors". The band today has maintained the reputation as both a preci- sion marching unit and superb playing group set by the orig- inal: band. The Toronto Signals Trumpet Band meets Monday's between 8:00pm and 10:30pm at Fort York Armories in Toronto.
