Page 13 â€" Great Canadian Town Band Festival â€" June 14-16, 2002 7th Toronto Regiment Band The 7th Toronto Regiment Band, Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery continues a proud association with the City of Toronto of over one hundred years. During the late 1800's, the Gunners' Band was a neces- sary part of any social or civic event. Concerts, garden par- ties, balls or opening cere- monies called for the inclu- sion of the Artillery Band. Newspaper accounts of the period tell us that an Artillery Band played on the roof of the first trip of the Toronto Street Railway from Yorkville to the Bay in 1861. The same band marched from Garrison Park to the Exhibition Grounds for the opening of the first Canadian National Exhibition. February 1997 marked the 75th continuous year for the present band. In 1922, LCol Massey of the 3rd Field Brigade C.A. invited John D. (Scotty) Wilson to reform the military band of the Artillery. Using a nucleus of members of the former Post Office Band, which had been led by Jack Fysh, he was soon able to parade in first war khaki and puttees. A search of the old cellars of the armories produced a set of nineteenth century uniforms that were once used by the 9th Toronto Battery and a local tailor refurbished these. Four gun- ners from the regiment car- ried Coleman Lanterns to enable the musicians to read their music on night parades through the city. The high musical stan- dards of the Artillery Band were soon apparent. At a competition held in 1924, the famous Càpt Charles O'Neill awarded the Gold Medal to the band for its performance of the William Tell Overture. Since its formation, the band has become widely known for its concert presen- tations and has been request- ed to play for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on their visits to Toronto in 1939, 1973 and 1984. In addition to its regular appearances in Toronto and southern Ontario, the band has also toured Northern Ontario and New York State. Under the direction of Bandmaster Roland Hill, the Band performs year-round at a variety of events throughout Southern Ontario. These include indoor and outdoor concerts, competitions, and parades in all weathers. The repertoire ranges from Bach to Broadway, from Sousa to soft rock, and attests to the great versatility required to play for just about any occasion. Frosted Brass, the Band's first Christmas C.D, came out in 2000. Whitby Brass Band rehearses on Thursday evenings, and is looking forward to the com- pletion of its new quarters in the historic Centennial Building, presently under ren- ovation. There is also a thriving Junior Band, which meets on Monday evenings, preparing learners of all ages to feed onto the Senior Band. ....our KEEP IT PITCH-IN CANADA WEEK, April 22-28 Stutt’s Pharmacy Prescriptions, Vitamins, Herbal Products, Homeopathic Products, Giftware, Diabetes Care Products, Photo-Finishing Tlno Montopoll, B.Sc.
