Hannu Halminen: A man with a mission Residents endure dust, mud ns road work continues The 8th Concession is just one of 12 roads in Clarington that will be resurfaced this summer. Work on the 8th Concession in the Leskard area began around July 24th, when the existing road surface was pulverized and six inches of crushed, granular 'A' gravel was spread on the road bed. With the hot, dry weather this summer, the residents along the two 1.5 km sections of road east of the Clarke/Darlington Townline undergoing resurfacing found themselves in a dust bowl for the first few weeks. Now water treatments are making the road a mud slick. Glenn Hogle, who runs a limousine service from his home on the 8th Concession, feels the length of time it's taking to get the work completed completed leaves a lot to be desired. He can't keep the cars clean. First it was the dust. Now the cars come in off the road covered in mud. "My cars are carrying more gravel than the road," he said over the phone with The Orono Times on Saturday. Hogle did say his two councillors have been very good about keeping him informed as to the progress of the work. However, he feels if it was any road other than a municipal one, the work would have been done a lot quicker. Murray Devitt, Claring- ton's road supervisor, said the dust problem was fixed on Friday with an application of calcium chloride on the gravel, gravel, which should control the dust till the contractor puts the high float mix on the road in September. Devitt admits the dust was a bit of a problem with this being a dry, hot summer. "We had water trucks working late at night and on weekends trying to control the dust," he said in a phone interview interview Friday. In September, the contractor, contractor, Miller Paving, will put the high float mix on the road, which, with the combination of heat and traffic, will develop develop into a hard surface similar to asphalt but not quite as durable. Clarington is spending a total of $375,000 on similar road treatments throughout the municipality this summer. Taking kids up in his airplane airplane is the best excuse Hannu Halminen knows for flying. Halminen, of the 8th Line, has been introducing youngsters youngsters to the joys of flying since 1993, and in that time has taken 307 kids up into the air for a free demonstration airplane airplane ride. As a participant in the Young Eagles program put on by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), Halminen donates his time and aircraft, introducing a new generation to the world of flight. The Young Eagles program was created in 1992 with a goal of giving one million young people an airplane ride by the year 2003 - the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first powered flight. The payoff for Halminen is the expressions on the kids' faces when they're in the air. "The kids just love it," he says. About three quarters of the children he takes up have never been in an airplane before, adds Hannu. Halminen attends Young Eagles rallies organized at various various centres in Canada and the The payoff for Halminen is the expressions on the kids 'faces when they 're in the air. A Young Eagle will come to see and understand - as through the eyes of an eagle -- that the true potential of life lies beyond everyday surroundings surroundings and may be reached through the pursuit of high personal goals, explains the EAA's promotional material. Halminen has reached a milestone within the organization organization with his more than 300 demonstration airplane rides. He hopes to up that number this fall with a Young Eagle Rally at his home base - the Hawke air strip. Local kids between the ages of eight and 17 will be offered the opportunity to take an Eagle flight. Further details will be made available as they arc finalized.
