^ Qrono Weekly Times - Wednesday, August 21,2002 - 3 From Around Home by Roy Forrester m It seem that I just do not get time to hang the binoculars around my neck and take off birding any more. However, there are many other interesting events to fill in the time and that was the case again on Sunday. Along with other members of the Clarington Concert Band, it was a trip to the Toronto Exhibition on Sunday beginning with a mid-morning arrival. The Clarington band was taking part in a band competi- tion^our stage time was 10:30 a.m. There was close to thirty other entries although not all in the same classification. classification. It wasn't long after arrival that we were on stage and playing. I thought the local band did well with their offering. offering. We will know more about this at the next practice on receiving a report from the four adjudicators. The Exhibition band shell has great acoustics and it was a pleasure and easy to play within this environment. It has been many years since I have been at the Ex and I did find that the venue is somewhat reduced from days gone by. But some of the same flavour is still there. James Lowery and I did take some time to listen to the next group from Brampton--a much larger band then Clarington's. We also had time to stroll through the midway, grab a snack and spend some time in one of the buildings. Municipal garden flower displays along a major portion of one side of the interior did prove interesting and I would give Scugog Township the red ribbon for their entry. The signage signage was top-notch and did attract your attention to the Scugog garden itself. Being from Durham I had to be interested interested and after all--Scugog gets my vote as to their approach on the hydro issue. Also, I found interest in what I would call a sizeable group of four to six foot monuments. monuments. It was quite apparent that the stones making up the monuments balanced or teetered on top of one another. No two were the same and having the opportunity to some repairs being made, it did take great care to undertake undertake the balancing act. This column is not to be without something on birds and it has been provided by James and Doreen Lowery out Kirby way and the stoiy goes like this: An Evening Birder Each evening bird lover Tom stood in his back yard hooting like an owl and one night an owl called back to him. , For a year Tom and his feathered friend hooted back and forth. He even kept a log of the conversations and thought he was on the verge of a breakthrough in interspecies communication. His wife however had a conversation with her next door neighbour. "My husband spends his nights call out to owls." "That's odd," the neighbour neighbour replied, "So does my husband." Then it dawned on them. pi p i m & m rr<p i m iw 51 Happy 50 th Anniversary Murray & Marjorie Paterson " / f/ ' - <• „ x v ]t /~ E ... • T:' September 17,1952 Friends and family are invited to share in this happy celebration at a Come & Go Tea in their honour Sunday, September 15th, 2002 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Newcastle Community Hall Newcastle Best Wishes Only Jxan/Yi à Sûtd , Laura Vanhaverbeke's Good turn-out for Beef BBQ Orono's 35th annual Beef Barbecue last Wednesday was a successful evening of food, fun and fellowship. Everyone enjoyed the musi cal entertainment provided by The Jazz Cats. Overcast skies did hold off during the barbeque, and it only started to rain once the picnickers started to pack up after 7:30 pm. Money raised will go towards the Orono Arena maintenance program. The winner of the 50/50 draw was Christine Taylor, of Orono. Credit goes to the folks who put their time and effort into making the barbeque à great success. "We thank the volunteers who helped and the patrons who come every year," says Blain Moffat, volunteer chair. Without them, he says. Orono would not have such a wonderful wonderful community event.
