c Orono Weekly Times - Wednesday, September 4,2002 - 11 Lan St. Johi "a Canadian pheniaieaor to open Oshawa Symphony's 46th season Red Cross helps students with first aid training Lara St. John, the guest artist who will launch the 46th season of the Oshawa-Durham Symphony, is hard to miss. She is six feet tall, has waist-length blonde hair, and she posed nude on the cover of her debut CD, covered only by the million dollar violin she clutches to her bosom. She has been accused of using her looks and flamboyant flamboyant marketing savvy to jump- start her career -- an accusation accusation she does not deny. Whatever she does, it works. She has been described by the New York Times as "something of a phenomenon" and by The Strad magazine and a "high-powered soloist." Sony Classical recently signed her to a contract that signals that her career is now definitely definitely mainstream. Her first Sony album is to be released this Fall. In short, she has arrived in the difficult world of classical music. On September 28 she will arrive in Oshawa to join Conductor Marco Parisotto and ODSO for two concerts: one in Oshawa, and a repeat performance at the George Weston Recital Hall in Toronto. Lara will perform the demanding Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D Major. The orchestra will round out the concert with Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony. The concert will be performed performed on Saturday September 28 in Oshawa at Calvary Baptist Church (Rossland and Ritson) beginning beginning at 7:30 p.m. The next day, the concert will be repeated in Toronto at the George Weston Recital Hall on Yonge St. beginning at 2:30 p.m. With Parisotto as Principal Conductor and Music Director, the ODSO has consistently consistently brought quality stars from Europe and Asia to perform perform with the orchestra. Darlington Men's Select Soccer League Report This past week saw the conclusion of another soccer season. Last Thursday, at the Darlington Hydro fields, the semi-finals of the Campbell League Cup were held. Last year's winner, Malvern UTD played Orono, and in the second game, Bowmanville played Maple Grove, finalists in last year's epic. Although Malvern beat Orono by a 4 - 0 count, the game was not a walk-over (as such a result would indicate) but a closely contested match. It was a case of Malvern capitalizing on their chances, while Orono could not even buy one goal. Malvern got two goals in each half. In the second game, Bowmanville went ahead on a first half goal, but Maple Grove persisted and were rewarded with the equalizer late in the second half. There were no goals in the overtime and a penalty penalty kick situation ensued. Maple Grove won the game 4-3 on a shoot out. The Final was held on Labour Day between Malvern and Maple Grove in an excellent game. Maple Grove went ahead in the 70th minute on a goal by Anthony Scanga. However, Malvern were not to be denied, and in the closing minutes Stephen Butchard tied the score. In the second half of overtime, Richard Andrews scored the winning "golden" goal for Malvern. This is the second time that Malvern has won the Campbell Cup since the award was inaugurated last season. This was also the second time that Maple Grove ended up as Finalists. The Orono team ended up 3rd place in the league and show great promise for the future. Coach Marius Basic and Manager Gord Lowery have done a great job of utilizing utilizing many Junior players into this team. The Orono Junior team also had an excellent excellent year, going undefeated in both the League and Cup. Well done, guys!
