^ Orono Weekly Times - Wednesday, September 11,2002 -12 Correction Last week's picture picture on the bottom of page 2, included some incorrect names. The young man 8th from the left was David Robinson, not Ritche Dupe. The unidentified little girl pn the far right was Karen Robinson. Sunday afternoon's demolition derby was a real crowd pleaser. Photo by Anita DeVries By Phyllis Lowery I have had the good luck to attend four good, Community Events, this year. The first was the Birthday Celebration held by Chris of Kendal for his wife Cecile's birthday. There were friends and relations from all over Ontario, Quebec and USA and many from the local area. What a feast that was. The second event was the Annual Beef BBQ put on in the Orono Park. The entertainment entertainment and the food was excellent. excellent. This is a time to see friends who have moved away but, always come back for this event. The third was the Chicken BBQ at Kendal United Church. Again terrific food and more visiting. The fourth is the Durham Fair 150 continuous years. I think in the last 22 years that I have attended, this year was one of the best Parades I have seen. Glad to see it is held on Saturday morning, it was good to hear more than one band and the floats were very interesting interesting of course the clowns the mini cars and bikes are fun to watch. Of course my first love is the old cars or should I say older cars, I guess that is because they are what I first rode in and learned to drive, that's giving away my age. I love to look at the displays displays in the Arena but that can be done in one or two hours. By going on Thurs. evening I was able to see the animals and the fowl, it is too bad that we don,t have a proper building building so that they could be kept at the Fair for Saturday and Sunday. A lot of people can only come then and most of the animals are gone. The agricultural displays were fewer but that was because of the late growing season, but they had some really interesting interesting Posters and Pictures for you to look at. I know that the children love the Fair, their main interest interest is the Midway and Rides. I must comment on the midway. The last two years I have noticed a vast improvement, it is so clean and everything is spaced out so well that you can walk around it and enjoy seeing the rides and games even if you, yourself don't take part. The way everything was spaced out for the other outside outside displays was excellent and a pleasure to walk through. I had difficulty finding finding the entrance to the old tractor display but once I did, there again it was fenced off and there was lots of room to see each and every one. My only criticism is, that all the events seem to be going on at the same time. When you want to see something that is on in the arena you miss what is going on in front of the grandstand. I would also like to see more entertainment in the arena where older people can sit and watch, there seems to be less each year. Once again the Orono Athletic Association have outdone outdone themselves with the meals and service upstairs in the arena. They just keep on dishing out good food. Also the food booths outside serve good quality food and the booths all look so clean and that must be hard to do with all the dust that is put up from the track. I wasn't going to go to the Fair on Sunday but, am glad I changed my mind. There was the best musical show that I have seen in years. Who needs high priced entertainers from out side the Community, when you have a local family like the Adams family and friends? Their music was excellent. It was a joy to hear the young Bluegrass group from Bowmanville and Claremont, and to see youngsters enjoy that music and get so much enjoyment from playing it. It looks like there is another family following in the footsteps footsteps of the Leahy Family, lets hope we see and hear more of all these groups in the next few years. All in all I can't say enough about the volunteers that work so hard, give up so much of their time and energy to make all these community events happen. We are so fortunate to live in this area, you can have the EX. I will take the Durham Fair. You could, never replace all these volunteers who make these things happen with hired staff. Hired staff would never have the feeling of community pride that these people show in everything that they do, the pride of seeing to events running running well, from entertainment, food preparation and service, all the things to see and do and enjoy. What would we do without them? These Volunteers are the best--the very best. Community spirit is alive and well in this community. Thank you.
