ÊHk Places I've 1 wB Done Time A mmmmm ^ Qrono Weekly Times - Wednesday, September 18,2002 - 3 Chili Time Saturday night I went to a com boil--some people call it a com roast but I don't why. We had quite a few of them back when I lived in Leskard. Leskard hasn't changed all that much over the years. It still has a main street and one other block with two streets-- Shater Lane and Tye Street. To my knowledge there has never been a spinster in Leskard. I don't know if it was because all the girls were pretty or because there was no street lights in the village. They all looked fine to me day or night. I do know that a few years ago when the local citizens took a vote for street lights, the fathers voted it down. In those days it was difficult difficult to get anything in Leskard. Colin Brown once said to get a cemetery in the village, they shot the first man because people used to live so long. And I know this to be a true story because the old abandoned cemetery sits up on a hill behind the Damneara Ranch. I have been there many times and saw with my own eyes a tombstone that reads "Here lies Les Moore, 4 slugs from a 44. No Les, no Moore." That should be proof enough. Tmth be told, I owe my life to the girls of Leskard. One night I fell into a large tub that wé were cooking com in. Thank goodness they got me out before I drowned or the water got too hot. For weeks after, I had nightmares of being eaten by cannibals and waking up in a cold sweat. You can't have a corn boil without baked beans or chili. Whenever we had a pig roast at the ranch, I always cooked chili. This Saturday is the annual chili contest in Orono. This is my prize winning recipe. Clifford's Fine Chili • Soak 25 lbs of beans for 24 hours (your choice of beans) • Cook slowly over an open fire • Stir between drinks • Add 2 lbs. of hamburg and 4 oz. chili peppers every 30 minutes. • Add diced onions and green peppers hourly • After 4 hours, add one pint of black molasses. When cooked, add one small bottle bottle of tabasco sauce. Pour in 2 - 40 oz. bottles of Jamaican Rum 140 proof. • Stir thoroughly. • It is now ready to serve. You can either eat it or drink it. It's sooo delicious! Make sure everyone goes home after the party and remind them that for every mile of road there's two miles.of ditches. A couple of things are happening happening in Orono this, weekend. Saturday is the chili contest on Main. Street. To register for the chili contest call Donna 983-5207. The more the merrier. merrier. As he spoke, Canada Post was setting up shop there. Cecile Perron, wife of Roaster's owner Christian Perron, expects to become the new post master in Kendal. The Perrons' have hired on the two clerks who had worked in PVR Variety (now Kendal Variety), Sherrill Souch and Maureen Wilkin . "We will be providing all the services we had at PVR," said Maureen Wilkin, in an interview over the phone. "Express post, money orders, registered mail, sending and receiving packages and selling stamps." Wilkin didn't wish to comment comment on why Kendal Variety did not receive the postal outlet. outlet. When Oh was phoned again and told the news about the outlet having been open at another small store in town, she was shocked, "Why didn't they call me?" Pat Dyck, the retail business business manager for Canada Post, was away on vacation and so could not comment on why she made the decision to put the outlet in Roasters. Diane Corfe, the post master master in Millbrdok who answers ] Ms. Dyck's pager while she is gone, could not comment. "I don't know why," she said in a phone interview yesterday. "I think it was maybe done quickly to get the service back." So the citizens of Kendal have won their fight for a post office but time will tell if Miae Oh will win the fight to succeed in her business. Earth... our living room...
