Orono Weekly Times - Wednesday, September 18,2002 - 4 ) Boundaries Continued from front benefit from this redivision. Electoral boundaries are readjusted after each 10 year census to reflect the changes and movements of the population. population. The redistribution is carried carried out by commissions -- one for each province, which are independent of Parliament and parliamentarians. Each province is assigned a population population quotient, which are reflected in their electoral districts. districts. Ontario's 95 federal ridings have a population quotient quotient of 107,642 each. The Newcastle Ratepayers Association do not see what Clarington has in common with municipalities of Hope Township either. Ratepayer Chair Murray Patterson stated, "Bottom line is, we wrote our member of parliament, and told them we felt we had nothing nothing in common with the new boundary due to the fact we are one of the fastest growing areas on Ontario." Not only are the three levels of government government opposed to the new electoral electoral boundaries, they are working together to see the changes never take effect. Local Councillor Charlie Trim also spoke out against the new federal electoral boundaries at Monday evening's council meeting. Trim said that Clarington was included in the GTA and to go east would be a total waste. Mayor Mutton told councillors councillors the M.P,'s and M.P.P.'s offices were working together on this, and there were a number number of resolutions coming to council from the municipalities' municipalities' various rate payer associations. associations. Council decided to wait till the resolutions were on the council table, so they could endorse them and add their concerns. Individuals interested in voicing their concerns at a public meeting have till October 12 to notify the Commission Secretary at 1210-150 York Street, Toronto, Ontario M5H3S5, or by e mail at www.elections.ca of their intention. A public meeting on this matter will be held at the Durham Region Court Houses, 605 Rossland Road East in Whiby, on Friday November 8,2002. If there is no federal election election before June of 2004, according to Alex Shepherd, the old boundaries will stay in effect. | Correction Notice | A parade float created by members of St. Saviour's Anglican Church was misidentified in our Orono Fair coverage last week.
