4 - Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 23,2002 Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis Harvest Time It's late in the season and getting much too cold to sit out on the benches that grace the Main Street of the town I love so much. But even this late in October, it's still kind of nice to be able to do so. Some folks like what I write about and others are quite indignant about it and tell me so. Such was the case the other day., A middle-aged woman ragged on me about the trash I write. "I just do the. best I can," was my reply. "You can't make chicken soup out of chicken sh ," I said."...but if your husband has any lead left in his pencil maybe he could write an article article and I could have a week off." That soon calmed her down and she departed. October has always been one of my favourite months. I just love the full harvest moon and Thanksgiving and the the harvest of the fruits and vegetables. vegetables. This was the month we always thrashed the pumpkins pumpkins and the whiffle tree seed at the Damneara Ranch. Yeah, October was a busy month harvesting mucketts and the sharpening stones. Fall was here when you saw the gilly- galoo birds starting to flock up for their trip south and the mug wumps were getting ready to hibernate for the winter. Saturday night a friend called me from Halifax. We worked together here in Ontario during the 70s when he and his wife would come up for the harvest. They would arrive in late July or early August picking cucumbers and corn then on to . tobacco and apple picking and finish off the season cutting and loading Christmas trees in the Pontypool area. My friend, Larry and his wife, Linda spent a lot of time at the Damneara Ranch and we had a lot of fun. Linda always laughed about the bad luck I had betting on horses. She always said, if I woke up in the morning with five dollars dollars in my pocket, I would have someone else's pants on. Most times she would have been right. Saturday night she got on the phone and wanted to know if I knew where she could get a new ring-dang-doo but I didn't. didn't. They are quite scarce. I never grew any at the ranch but I promised to be on the look out for one. I know she would be more than pleased.
