Kirby Captures Gold in Soccer tournament by Anita DeVries Fancy footwork, amazing goals and incredible athletic effort made the Clarke Soccer Tournament at Orono Public School an exciting day, last Thursday. The weather was wonderful, the athletes were agile, and the games were close. Eight teams from Newtonville, Orono, Newcastle and Kirby competed competed for the championship. Semi-finalists were Kirby 2 versus versus Orono 2 on one field and Kirby 1 against Newcastle 1 in the other. Both teams played simultaneously simultaneously and both scores were 1-1 at the end of the allotted half hour. Ryan Vallance scored for Kirby 2 and Nick Vreeker for Orono 2. They went to sudden death after the whistle and Orono took the game with a great penalty shot from Nick Vreeker. It was Shelby MacDonell for Kirby 1, and Taryn Nicholson for Newcastle 1, who kicked the tie score in the other semifinal semifinal game. They also went to sudden death. There was nonstop nonstop action across the field before Jeremy Caruana nabbed the ball and passed it to Nicholas Kuijpers who belted belted it up in front of the net, where Rachel Bonnetta sent it flying toward the Newcastle goalie passing his legs before he could grab it, making Kirby the winner. The final game was played against Orono 2 and Kirby 1. There was soine great action, but it was a rough ride for Orono 2. Jeremy Caruana started the game by scoring two goals quickly, one with an assist by Nicholas Kuijpers and the other with an assist by Ryan Wood. The tireless little bullet, Shelby MacDonell, received a pass from Kuijpers in front of the net and pounded it into the top corner. Kuijpers kicked his own goal next, coming from center with the ball and taking it all the way up on the left side of the net. Kirby was awarded a penalty shot after a hand ball in the goal zone which Kuijpers took. It was a beautiful beautiful shot to the top of the net, just curving under the steel bar. It was 5-0 by half time for KIRBY'S WINNING TEAM - Front (l-r): Shelby MacDonell, Rachel Bonnetta and Brittni Hart. Second row (from left): Samantha Botell, Shawn Lowe, Jeremy Moore, Nicholas Kuijpers, Ryan Wood and Chad Moore. Back row (from left): Sigourny Connor, Monique Canfield, Emily Bamsey, Erica Crocker, Jeremy Caruana, Dillon Empey, Matt Parsons and Riley Mitchell. Kirby. Orono tried hard to hold off their opponents. Kirby was only afforded one more goal before the whistle blew to end the game. It was a beautiful kick by Shawn Lowe to the top right side of the net, impossible for the hard working working Orono goalie, Brandon Cox, to save. It was a great day, with all the action of a world class soccer soccer game. Kirby placed first overall, Orono, 2nd and Newcastle 3rd. Saturday night in Sunderland was quite an event as we arrived at the arena to see it surrounded by military. It was like the movie "Red Dawn" but after inquiries were made it was discovered that the military were on manoeu- vers, practicing initiating martial martial law. It was comforting to know that they weren't there in case of trouble at the arena. Orono opened the scoring in the first period with Szymczak (from Millson) getting us started. started. It was 2-0 on a goal by Millson from Price and Caruana before Sunderland scored in the second period. This would be the only goal scored on Martin and Orono went on to pot 3 more in the third period.
