Wednesday, June 2, 2004 Letters to the Editor Smoke and mirrors Dear Regional Councilors: The recent by-law to ban smoking in all public places gives exemptions to bingo halls, casinos and racetracks. Why 1 ? The government is insisting insisting the ban will not hurt private private businesses but allowed the three categories that produce produce a large revenue stream for their coffers to continue to allow smoking in designated areas. Why wouldn't casinos, ' bingo halls and racetracks offer the same health hazard one may face at the neighbor hood pub? The law seems to be a bit of smoke and mirrors with the government protecting protecting all its own interests and letting private businesses take it on the chin as usual. The law as written is very unfair. The government can't and shouldn't have it both ways. Ban it everywhere or make designated smoking areas an option for private businesses. The law as written encourages one to gamble if you wish to smoke in a public place. Jeanne Burnside Orono Congratulations organizers To the town of Orono, We attended the Bluegrass Jamboree this past weekend and were very pleased with the show. There were some great entertainers, but what impressed us so much was the way your town sponsored and supported this event. This is part of what made it such a success. The organizers had everything running smoothly, I'm sure next year will be even bigger, as everyone who attended will be talking about it--I know we will be. Congratulations. I thank you all for a great weekend. Lola & Garnet Hobbs, Madoc, ON , • •' ■•é.: Tf Y ■ .
