6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, August 18, 2004 Northumberland Motor Products Eagles Hometown victory Designated hitter B.J. Hackett who hit the grand- slam homer. It was a great day for baseball. baseball. A little rain to settle the dust, then some sun came out for all. to enjoy. The players responded and we had a great playoff game in Kendal. The Whitby Canadians brought a full team to battle their regional rivals. For the first four innings, the pitchers dominated the game, although there were some sparkling fielding plays also. Dave Trew ran a country mile to snare a long fly ball in the outer web of his glove in the first inning. In the second inning, Rob Staples ran to the fence for one fly, then to the infield for a second and then gathered in a third fly to record all three outs in the inning. In the fifth inning, Kendal managed to put some runs on the electronic board. Singles by Steve DeGraaf and Nick Stacey set up the first move by Manager Paul Sharpe. He called on Bob Witheridge to bunt. Bunt he did. The catcher hurried his throw causing an error, allowing Steve to score and Bob to proceed to second. Then, Bryan Landry executed the squeeze bunt to perfection scoring Nick. Troy Foster continued his domination of the Whitby hitters. In the sixth, Rob Staples, Troy Foster and Steve DeGraaf reached on singles and a walk. Manager Sharpe made another another one of his moves. He called on regular designated hitter B.J. Hackett to pinch hit for Bob Witheridge. B.J. promptly promptly hit the first pitch over the right field fence for a grand slam homer. This made the score six nothing in Kendal's favour. Mark Foster came in to pitch in the eighth inning and after a shaky start allowed Whitby only, one run. In their half of the eighth, Kendal scored three runs on two walks and three hits to end the game due to the mercy rule. The final score was eleven to one but it was not indicative of the play. Both teams played excellent baseball and the fans got their money's worth again. Speaking of fans, the sidelines were packed and the 50/50 draw winner Craig Lockhart from Lockhart donated $40 of his $127 prize back to the team to help pay for the umpires, who did a super job. The victory gave the hometown boys one of the two games it needs to go on to the All-Ontario Senior "B" playoffs on the Labour Day Weekend. The next game is Tuesday night at Iroquois Park in Whitby starting at 7:30. If a third game is required it will be played in Port Hope at 7:30 on Wednesday night.
