6 - Qrono Weekly Times Wednesday, September 1, 2004 |, Sü| ■ÊlBL. " Beverly Netusil recently competed this summer at the Canadian Fastpitch Championship in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Canadian fastpitch champ Though Kendal is a small village, it is a hotbed of talented talented ball players. Local teenager, teenager, Beverly Netusil has risen up the ranks to play for the Chinguacousy Cougars, one of the top fastpitch softball teams in Ontario. The Cougars a tier one team, just outside the city of Brampton, recently qualified to play at the nationals in Winnipeg, Manitoba and came back with a fourth place standing. The 16 year old Clarke High School student has been playing ball since she was four. Her mother Barb was one of her first coaches. Bcv played house league softball in Orono until she was ten. She has since spent two years with the Oshawa Stingers, the following two years with the Whitby Eagles and the last year with the Cougars. Her main title on the team is D.P. - designated player - or in baseball baseball terms, designated hitter. At her recent tournament in Winnipeg she baited an average average of .500. When Bev is not at bat, she plays in the outfield or fills in as the backup catcher catcher for the team. Prior to the Canadian championship, the Cougars went to the National Softball World Series in Columbus Ohio where they played at the bantam level. They didn't fair as well as the Oshawa Stingers, the team on which Kendal teenager plays. However they were in a broader field of talented older players. This past weekend they played in the Sid Morris - Bulova Watch tournament at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, an "invitation only" event. After a rain delay Sunday, the Chinguacousy Cougars were proceeding to the semi-finals last night with two wins and a loss hoping for no less than a third place finish. When Bev is not playing ball, she plays competitive volleyball in Port Perry for the Port Perry Panthers. She has also taken up the sport of speed skating, a skill that has carried over from her figure skating in Orono. Her goal is to acquire a scholarship for her first love, softball. The next year will be crucial as that is when the scouts will be out in force observing the teams. In the interim though, Bev will be back training in the fall for next year's season, hoping to improve her catching catching skills and batting avg. • Donna Wood Bring us your hockey stories and uue'11 publish them in the ORONO TIM6SI ijjjj'ij ; llili ilfif- Darlington Soccer Club 2004 Outdoor Standings as of August 15th.
