Wednesday, September 1, 2004 Ontario Stewardship Rangers repair Orono Crown Lands boardwalk By Shawn Verge Team Leader York-Durham Ontario Stewardship Rangers Durham Land Stewardship Council ORONO - This past Wednesday Wednesday and Thursday, members of the York-Durham Ontario Stewardship Rangers were at the Orono Crown Lands rebuilding the boardwalk that connects the Outdoor Education Centre with the bridge over Wilmot Creek. The boardwalk is mainly used by students and teachers visiting visiting the Centre. Somewhat easier easier and safer access to the bridge and trails beyond was needed. The old boardwalk was made of wooden pallets and planks; it has now been replaced with cedar poles at its base and hemlock planks for the tread. The cedar poles were taken from the site and the hemlock planks were graciously graciously donated to The Orono Crown Lands Trust (OCLT) by Peter Schleifenbaum of the Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve. The 2004 Ontario Stewardship Stewardship Rangers are Lauren Zweep of Kettleby, Emma Howe of Newmarket, Kyle Gretchev of Uxbridge, Kevin Glen of Newmarket, and Team Leader Shawn Verge of Aurora. John Slater of the OCLT supervised the reconstruction reconstruction and assisted the Rangers in their work. The Ontario Stewardship Rangers (OSRs) are a part of a youth employment strategy of the Ministry of Natural Resources. Resources. The York-Durham OSRs are based out of the MNR's Aurora District office in Aurora. Each year, seventeen-year- olds from around Central and Southern Ontario apply to the Ranger programme and spend their summer days working on various natural resource and environmental stewardship projects in and around their communities. Teams cover one or sometimes two regional regional municipalities and work with private landowners, environmental environmental non-government agencies, as well as with other branches of the government through their local steward- . ship council, in this case--the Durham Land Stewardship Council. Some of the other projects they have been involved with this year include in-stream erosion control control work, tree planting, ecosystem monitoring and wildlife habitat design and creation projects. welcomes young children and their caregivers to a relaxed morning of fun and friendship Orono United Church Friday mornings 9:30 to 11:30 starting Sept. 17th For more information call Morag 983-5590 or Tracey 983-9209 We hope to see you there!
