10 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, December 1, 2004 Principal initiates new improvement strategy Principal Steve Weatherbee came to Orono Public school with a lot of ideas last March. He has made a commitment to see a two per cent improvement improvement in math and literacy scores for the school in the 2006 provincial tests administered administered by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). The school has been performing below school board and provincial averages, averages, says Weatherbee. Weatherbee has initiated an all encompassing improvement improvement strategy, which included a new colour scheme for the inside of the building, a new work room and resource centre centre for teachers, a change in class scheduling, and new curriculum. curriculum. As the school did perform below average, it was selected by the Kawartha Pineridge School Board for it's REACH program, which identifies schools in need of additional support to improve student results. "Being identified for the program, allowed me to Orono Public School principal Steve Weatherbee submit a program funding proposal," said Weatherbee. The Ministry of Education provides funding for boards that have identified schools that need it, Weatherbee told the Orono Times. With the additional funds, Weatherbee has been able to purchase a completed set of guidedrreading-level books for every grade and new math curriculum. The new math program called Math Makes Sense, is a seamless kindergarten through grade six program. "It is based on inquiry, thinking and problem problem solving using hands-on experimentation," stated Weatherbee. Students are actually involved in the discovery discovery of a concept, "it is hands-on. They internalize learning because they experienced experienced it," he stated. Professional development, where teachers are taught to use the new ' curriculum and measure student development, is also included in Weatherbee's school improvement improvement plan. The school community will also be actively involved in the improvement plan. There will be workshops for parents, to show them how it works, and how they can help us , claims Weatherbee. "Support for parents, to help us support their children," he stated. "In fact, the $6,500 raised from chocolate bar sales by the School Council this fall played a big part in resource funding," says Weatherbee. As Mrs. Singh plans to return to Orono Public School at the end of he maternity leave in February 2005, Mr. Weatherbee won't be around to see-the full results of his Plan. Wanting more is one thing.
