Orono Weekly Times - 3 Places I've Done Time by Clifford Francis Cheers! Last week I was in Port Hope at Gilmer's Home Hardware when an elderly lady spoke to me. "How are you doing?" she asked. "You've lost some weight." That made me feel good. Then she went on to say, "You look quite, pale, have you been sick?" That made me feel bad. While she was talking, I was trying to figure out who she was. Finally it came to me. I had known her son and daughter a long while ago. She remembered me and I could hardly believe it. "How is your son Fred?" I asked. "He is still down in New Brunswick growing potatoes. potatoes. He farms and frets and keeps on losing money and spending more and more time in Florida," she said. I finally got around to asking her about her daughter daughter Gaye. "She is living down east and grieving the loss of her husband," she said. "He died about a year ago. He was a great hunter and had fallen out of his tree stand while hunting deer. No one knows whether he fell while climbing up the tree, or whether he. fell getting out of the stand. Either way he fell and died." Mrs. Murphy said Gaye's husband had left her "well fixed." No financial worries. I offered to phone and give her my condolences but the mom said not to bother. She wouldn't be interested in a farm hand. That made me feel bad again. We said our goodbyes and later I thought more about this farm hand and the fun we had. I met Gaye and Fred when they were young. They lived with the mom in Port Hope during the school year and. then went to the east coast and lived with their dad during the summer months. When they got a bit older they lived down east most all year and then came up to their mom's in the summer. One November Gaye phoned and said she had a grand surprise. "Your pregnant," pregnant," I said. "Not from lack of practice," she replied, "but you're wrong. It's a grand surprise." "You're coming to Ontario for Christmas." But I was wrong again. "Dad and I found some barrels of beer bobbin in the bay. Barrels of Dominion Beer, the grandest beer in Newfoundland, and I'm sending you up a barrel. True to her word, a few days later a barrel arrived. Not a little puny barrel, but a rather latge 60 gallon barrel. I wasn't long getting a spigot into that barrel and having a glass. It truly was the finest beer to ever come off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. For the next two months I drank a gallon every day arid if I missed a day I drank two gallons the following day. I thanked her many times for the beer and she said I owed her one, and I guess I still do. As this extraordinary year, comes to a close, I want to thank the people of Ontario for responding so generously generously to the Book Program. At this festive time, I invite you to celebrate the season at my annual New Year's Levee, to be held on January 1 st in Thunder Bay. An employee strongly suggested all affected should see a doctor for antibiotics. To clarify, a virus can not be cured by antibiotics. Green nasal discharge' suggests infection but does not differentiate differentiate virus from bacteria. Certainly when a person is unwell it is worth being assessed by a doctor; however, however, only bacterial illnesses will respond to antibiotics.
