Miss Angela, owner of Angela's Optical, runs the successful successful Freedom of Dance School on Park St. in Orono. Over 100 students flock to the studios each week. There they can elect to take a variety of dance training or "shotokan" karate classes by expert teacher Rickie Garlough. Miss Angela and her assistant, Miss Janna (Janna Dodds) offers jazz, tap, modern, modern, ballet, hip hop and musical musical theatre classes. This year, Miss Angela will be taking 15 members of the club to five regional competitions. competitions. The first competition competition will be held in Ajax March 5th and 6th at the J.C. Richardson Theatre. The dancers are entered into four different categories of dance. Modern dance, a routine that is an interpretive, lyrical form of jazz, hip hop, tap, and seven solo numbers. The public public is welcome to come observe the performances. The other competitions will be held in Waterloo, two in Toronto and one in Niagara Falls, where they have the chance to qualify to compete - at the DBA (Dance Educators of America) national competition competition in New York City this July. Angela believes that competition strengthens the student's confidence and skill, and she believes her dancers have a good chance to qualify at this national level. Presently the group is practicing their routines, and fundraising to defer the cost of costumes and travel to the events they plan to attend. This weekend, February 5th at 7 pm, the club will be having a Movie Night that is open to the public. They will be showing showing Sponge Bob, Square Pants "the Movie" at their studio, 6 Park St. Admission will be four dollars for kids, five for adults, with drinks and popcorn available at a small cost. Kids are encouraged to wear their PJ's and come with their pillows and blankets. The following weekend, they will be holding a Valentine's Dance for the public public at the studio. Tickets are $15, or $25 per couple, and there will be a buffet, cash bar and DJ to dance the night away. Tickets are available by calling 905-983-5002. "* is'» * Contractors split two January 29th saw Orono #2 lose against Newcastle #3, 10-3. Josh Kelly played well in net, but couldn't stop the high shots from the strong Newcastle offence. In period one, Curtis Stainton of the Danco General Contractors put the team on the board with one. Connor MacVàrish tapped one in at 40-second mark, tying the game 2-2, but unfortunately the score didn't stand long as Newcastle found the top corner corner to take a 3-2 lead. Orono lost its steam in the second and Newcastle profited profited with three goals. The third period saw one more goal from Josh Canfield, unassisted. unassisted. January 30th was a better day. The Orono #2 team faced off against Clarington Top Vinyl. Kelly was in net. The strong defense consisted of Shane Battersbÿ, Cody Hughes, Jessica Moore and Billy Qualthrough. Josh Canfield was on top of his game. The centerman came away with a hat trick plus one for good measure. The team played a fast solid game. In the first, Canfield opened the scoring up with an assist from Stainton. Ryan Bain netted the second goal assisted by Battersby. Canfield finished up the first period with one goal, assisted by Hughes. In the second, both teams were able to score one apiece. Canfield secured the lone goal, unassisted. In the third period, Bain and Canfield each netted one giving giving the Orono team the 6-2 win. Assists went to Mitch Canfield and Clayton Kapuscincki. D.W. ST.
