Wednesday, March 16, 2005 Orono Weekly Times - 3 "'iffl'i ill Places I've Done Time Green-eyed girl 1 have always been quite fond of St. Paddy's Day and everything it brings. A few years ago most communities communities held some sort of a function on or around the 17th of March. The local dances seemed to bring out the best in a lot of people. I called them the "hug and slug" dances, as that seemed to happen on the odd occasion. occasion. Irish people such as myself like to dance and play the fiddle fiddle and the squeeze box, and take on a few drinks to lighten up our feet. The drink really seems to do the trick. One morning after attending attending a dance, I awoke and thought of the previous night's dance. It seemed to have been a success until I moved my head. I thought it would explode, Slowly I started to recall the previous night's events. The dance had started out well. Being protestant or catholic didn't matter much. A couple of drinks to loosen everyone up, seemed to work well. I slid over to the other side of the hall to ask a nice Catholic girl with flaming red hair and green eyes, if she would care to dance, and she said, "Not in this lifetime." I took no offence. Why not have a couple more drinks and try again. I don't know why I was partial to red haired beauties that were Catholic. By 10:30 there had been a couple of skirmishes, but I had not taken part in those. Someone would shut out the lights for a few minutes, and order would be restored. Long before midnight midnight things were rolling pretty pretty good, and I remember asking asking another young lady to dance. She was sitting with her mom and dad and a few other people. Her old man jumped up and yelled, "You'll not dance with that wee bastard," bastard," and hit me about the eye with his cane, shilah, or a wooden object of some kind. When I came to, I was outside getting some fresh air and another drink. I was damned groggy from the hit in eye or the drink, I'm not sure which. Anyway, all in all, it was a good dance. Lots of green beer, green around the gills from drinking too much, and green with envy, and mad at the guy who got to take home that green-eyed girl I liked so much. I thought, oh well, maybe next year. mm ■' 'fu*h jusaoaw Now available in Clarington I only at FRED'S AUTOBODY 163 Baseline Road, Unit 1 Bowmanville, Ontario L1C 3L4 Tel: (905) 623-6353 Fax: 905-623-3913 E-mail: FAB@on.aibn.com Complete Collision Repair, ■ Fred DeVries, OWNER Restoration and Refmishmg FREE ESTIMATES COMPETITIVE RATES INSURANCE CLAIMS Chocolate fyojj 905-983-9779 on the premises from the finest Belgian Chocolate. This is one issue among many that are very important to those in my riding, says Oda who suggests she could receive some negative fall-out from the stand she has taken. However, Oda says, there are other important issues that they should be moving on to, such as lower taxes, dealing with the agricultural crisis, gun registration, etc. Oda decided to make her decision public at this time, rather than continue to hold the riding in suspense, because input from voters had started to taper off. She also wanted to make her position public before attending any policy conferences on the sub ject. "I wanted to make sure I was listening to my riding," she stated.
