BQWMAMVIU-E ■ AT QUEEN ST. by John O'Toole Durham Region is one of six Ontario communities participating in a pilot program program aimed at getting welfare welfare recipients into the workforce. The program is to be offered through a private private sector human resources firm, WCG International, in cooperation with municipal Ontario Works offices. WCG International is based in British Columbia, where it runs a similar "JobWave" program that links persons on social assistance with employment opportunities. The Ontario program will be named JobsNow, and is focused on those who have been on social assistance for more than 12 months. This is much like the "Ontario Works" program that the Liberals criticized when they were in.opposition. Under the pilot program coming to Durham, persons on social assistance returning returning to the workforce will receive individual coaching until they land a job and continued coaching after they are hired. The target is to reach 12,000 clients by May 2007 in Peel Region, Durham Region, Hamilton, Windsor, Ottawa and Nipissing. Opposition MPPs will, of course, be monitoring this program to ensure it meets its objectives. We must also keep in mind the fact that à competitive tax rate, an efficient efficient government and a strong economy are the best ways to ensure jobs are created created in Ontario. These values values seem to be lost on the McGuinty government, which is continuing a policy of taxing more and delivering delivering less.
