We in Clarington are concerned for our residents safety and would like everyone everyone to assist our fire services in completing the program. program. iCIarington Emergency and Fire Services found that 90% of Clarington residents have a smoke alarm, however however only 79 % of those were actually working. Our goal in Clarington is to have every home with at least one working smoke alarm. It is recommended by the Fire Services to test your smoke alarm(s) monthly, whether they are battery or electrically operated. To ensure that your smoke alarm will work when you need it, change the battery in battery operated smoke alarms twice a year. Remember when you change your clock, change your battery. If your smoke alarm Is 10 years or older you should consider replacing it, with a new updated alarm. Many people are not aware that smoke alarms are required by law and that you may be fined up to $235.00 for each smoke alarm not operational or that are missing. It is the responsibility of the owner to provide provide smoke alarms. In a case of a rental building, the landlord must supply and install working smoke alarms. The tenants have a personal responsibility to maintain the smoke alarm in their unit in working condition, i.e. (not removing the battery or the alarm itself). As of September 1,2005 Emergency & Fire Services are able to issue tickets to anyone that does not have a working smoke alarm In their home.
