4 - Orono Weekly Times By the way by Steven G. Wiggins Wednesday, September 28, 2005 Lemon meringue pie It was at the "repeat if necessary" necessary" stage while cleaning the car carpets, that I realized I wouldn't be attending the workshop on genealogy in Warkworth. It rained heavily, so I was greeted by soggy dog smell and it was time to, as the instructions indicated, "Thoroughly "Thoroughly vacuum. Apply foam and repeat." A stranger's instructions were not going to waste a beautiful beautiful day, wet dog residue or not. Therein, (as Glenn Gould often opened his CBC Radio documentaries), "lies a story." Jeanine s Backtalk Cafe, in Warkworth, where a mighty fine lemon meringue pie might be had if she was kindly towards me. My dog (one of Howard Myles' last Labrador retriever pups) made my slice more likely. Jeannine loves dogs who don't talk back in Jeannine s Backtalk Cafe. I do. I enjoy lemon pie, not .because of its obvious attributes--a glistening brown caramelized sugar atop a firm yellow filling, but because it reminds me of Leslie Campbell and her three daughters who retired from Garden Hill to the family fann in Warkworth. Her husband Stuart is recovering from cancer and so I don't visit them as often. Leslie used to accuse me of letting my dog, (a previous dog, also a làb), loose at meal times. As Leslie recalls, "The first time we had you over, you double-dipped... the girls and I had our doubts about you." Leslie and her family grew close to me. and we exchanged more than pleasantries. I would make up some chore to do at her place, or she likewise, the payment between us --Leslie's lemon meringue pie. Leslie doesn't bake so often, and I don't do chores, other than attempt to keep dog hair and people hubris at a less than "repeat if necessary" level of closeness. Having accomplished a pleasant day and not traveling out of our community to Lemonworth, retired CBC sound engineer, Lomé Tulk quietly and professionally attended to some of my medium medium difficult tasks. Simple for him, complex for me. I prevailed prevailed past my traveling mind, wandering aimlessly between the past and future, and Lome completed our project. Unfortunately Unfortunately our time to visit was brief. Lome never accepts pay- ; ment, I simply folded half the cash in my pocket and tucked it in his hand, remembering Lome was late to take his wife to dinner and that she doesn't bake and loves lemon meringue pie.
