Many of our existing roads were built for traffic volumes volumes from the sixties and are having difficulty handling the increase that has resulted from growth. Public transit is also an important part of the picture. But the consensus consensus seemed to be that there will not be a mass conversion from cars to transit in the foreseeable future. That's why rapidly-growing rapidly-growing communities like Durham need better highways. One of my priorities is to push for a decision on where the north-south link between the future 407 and Highway 401 will be located on the west side of Clarington. It's only good planning to make the decision now because there's rapid growth occurring in the Courticc area. On the public transit front, the need for more parking at CO Train stations stations was perhaps the highest priority. However, However, there is also a consensus consensus that wc need improved transit beyond the lakcshorc corridor. Transit should serve northern Durham and also those commuters who work outside the downtown - core of Toronto. Wc also need the long-awaited GO Transit rail link to Bowmanville and we need provincial funding similar to what was provided provided York Region in order to build an effective effective public transit network network here in Durham. New dates for Daylight Saving Time in 2007 Beginning in 2007, Ontario residents will be changing their clocks for Daylight Saving Time on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November. Ontario's Attorney General General announced the change in the Legislature Legislature last week. This will match the new U.S. dates for Daylight Saving Saving Time. The Attorney General said it is important important to maintain Ontario's Ontario's competitive advantage advantage by following the same time changes as our biggest trading partner. partner. Since the changes are more than a year and a-half-away, we still have to put our clocks back this weekend. Daylight Saving time ends Sun., October 30. Energy credit will appear on hydro bills Typical Ontario homeowners will be getting getting a credit of $50 to $75 on their electricity bills to adjust for an overpayment in 2004. The refund will appear as a credit on our utility bills. However, this is not exactly an early visit from Santa. The money rightfully belongs to the consumer and it is simply simply being returned. Unfortunately, this is a one-time refiind that is based on rates for last year. Power rates are expected to continue to climb in the foreseeable future. In fact, higher electricity rates are one of the reasons why the average Ontario family is paying $2,000 more in taxes and other fees than they were two years ago. To further put matters in perspective, Opposition House Leader Bob Run- ciman pointed out in the Legislature last week that while the average Ontario electricity consumer consumer will receive a $60 rebate, Ontario's Energy Minister (now the Minister of Finance) was running up expense accounts that included $70 steaks paid for by the taxpayer. The total bill for a nine-day trip to Europe by the Minister and his staff in September of 2004 was about $50,000.
